TYRONE — Freshman Emma Hipps of Clearfield and junior Cate Baran of Tyrone hooked up in a classic high school softball pitcher’s duel decided by an unearned run in the sixth inning that gave the host Lady Eagles a 1-0 Mountain League win Monday afternoon.
Baran pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and one walk in notching the victory.
Hipps was equally tough, firing a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk.
Over the first five innings, Tyrone (7-5, 5-5 ML) had only two baserunners, Baran via the free pass in the first and Callie Maceno with a double in the fourth.
With one out in the lower sixth, Maci Brodzina singled, stole second base and scored on a grounder by Baran.
Clearfield (6-6, 4-5 ML) threatened in the top of the seventh as Olivia Bender and Kyra Mollura sandwiched singles around a forceout before Baran logged her final strikeout.
The Lady Bison also had two runners aboard in the fourth when Hipps doubled for her second hit and Bender walked. Baran stranded them with a strikeout.
Clearfield has a makeup game with Philipsburg-Osceola at the Bison Sports Complex Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
