CLEARFIELD – The Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library is celebrating National Library Week through April 13.
This is an opportunity for people to celebrate the contributions of the nation’s libraries and their workers. Library staff members encourage the public to visit local libraries and see what they are all about.
The Shaw Public Library is pleased to offer a variety of services from public computers to PowerLibrary and other online resources. Books, audiobooks, magazines and preloaded tablets are available for checkout.
Storytime is offered year-round for children 6 months to 5 years of age. And Summer Reading sees over 300 individuals taking part in literacy-based programs during the summer months.
Finally, staff members have special programs that occur during the year such as chess club for children and adults, book club and the PAWS for Reading Program.
On April 9, the Shaw Public Library will host a PA One Book Program at 10:30 a.m. for children 0-3 years of age. The first 20 families registered will receive this year’s featured book, “Barnyard Banter” by Denise Fleming.
A second event will take place on April 10 at 10:30 a.m. for children 3 – 5 years of age promoting “Not a Box” by Antoinette Portis. The first 40 families to register will receive a copy of the book.
Pre-school and Pre-K programs along with the public are encouraged to join in the fun activities. Refreshments will be served.
The programs are being sponsored by Cen-Clear. Space is limited so reservations are required by calling 814-765-3271 or by registering online by visiting the library’s Web site www.shawlibrary.org.
The Shaw Public Library is also celebrating National Poetry Month. Staff members are happy to bring back the poetry contest after a long absence.
Winners will be selected from the following age categories: first – second, third – fourth, fifth – sixth, seventh – ninth and 10th – 12th. The deadline to submit entries is this Friday, April 12.
Poems can be in various styles such as sonnets, haiku, limericks, free verse, etc. Entries must include a cover sheet that includes the student’s name, address, school and grade.
A panel of judges will select three finalists who will be notified by mail. They will be invited to attend a reception at the library on Saturday, April 27, from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Awards will be given at this time.
Special thanks should be given to the Clearfield Women’s Club for sponsoring the event and CNB Bank for providing uncirculated coin sets as prizes.
