WEST DECATUR – Central Intermediate Unit No. 10 held its 20th annual Interscholastic Reading Competition, hosted by Bald Eagle Area School District, on March 23.
This scholastic quiz competition is open to teams consisting of fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders in the CIU No. 10 service area.
The CIU No. 10 serves public, non-public and charter schools in Centre, Clearfield and Clinton counties.
The grand-prize winning team was the Rapid Fire Readers, coached by Michelle Marasco, from Mill Hall Elementary in the Keystone Central School District.
Of the 24 participating teams, 13 teams qualified for trophy honors. In addition to the grand prize, the following teams placed:
- First Place: Bellefonte Area School District (one team) and Lock Haven Catholic (one team).
- Second Place: Bald Eagle Area School District (two teams), Bellefonte Area School District (two teams), Philipsburg-Osceola Area School District (one team), St. John’s Catholic (one team) and Keystone Central School District (one team).
- Third Place: Philipsburg-Osceola Area School District (one team), Glendale School District (one team) and Young Scholars of Central PA (one team).
Additional teams participating in the event included Sugar Valley Rural Charter School and Moshannon Valley School District.
According to Heather Ressler and Deb Wakefield, CIU No. 10 reading competition coordinators, 320 students participated from the tri-county region.
The reading list for the competition includes 38 titles and is distributed before the end of each school year. This allows students to begin reading the books over the summer months, which encourages reading 12 months a year.
“The competition would not be possible without the cooperation from the hosting school, teachers, parents and volunteers,” according to Ressler and Wakefield.
Next year’s event is scheduled for early spring at the Bellefonte Area School District with a date to be determined.
