CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Lions Club made a special presentation to one of its members at its Jan. 22 meeting.
Club officers, on behalf of Lions Club International, awarded club member Jack Beard with a 65 years of service chevron.
He became a member of the Curwensville Lions Club on July 1, 1953. His sponsor was James French, owner of Robison Printing Shop.
Beard has sponsored five new members throughout his years of service, including Kevin Beardsley, Jackie Ciamacco, Dick French, James Hoyt, Susan Pyke and Ron Reiter. All of these members are still members of Curwensville Lions.
Beard served in the U.S. Army in the 169th Infantry tank unit from 1951 to 1953 and was based in Germany.
After his discharge, he returned to Curwensville and built a small service station next to Goodman’s Foodliner in Curwensville. He then started Beard Oil Co. in Clearfield.
He owned and operated this business from 1961 to 2004 when he sold the business. He has also served several years as the Lions Club president.
In addition, Beard has served his community and church well throughout his business career and as a member of the Lions Club.
The Curwensville Lions Club continues serving Curwensville and its surrounding area through donations to area charities, sponsoring an annual scholarship to a Curwensville graduating student, helping to provide assistance for Curwensville area residents in need of eyeglasses or hearing aids and other assistance.
