FOOTBALL
WORCESTER, Mass. — Western Polytechnic Institute of Technology senior kicker/punter Spencer Herrington (Clearfield) received a third honor for his outstanding 2018 season with the Worcester Area Football Association naming him the Special Teams Player of the Year for the 28th annual Steve “Merc” Morris All-Star Team.
Herrington was one of seven Engineers selected to the first unit by sports information directors of the eight colleges and universities in Worcester County, including NCAA Division I Holy Cross and Division II Assumption, that have football teams.
His previous honors were New England Men’s and Women’s Athletic Conference Special Teams Athlete of the Year and All-NEWMAC First Team and the D3football.com All-East Third Team.
Herrington led the NEWMAC in kicking points (66), field goals (12-for-15) and extra points (30-for-30).
He punted 53 times for a 35-yard average, with a long of 55 yards.
As a junior, Herrington earned second-team recognition behind Cole Tracy, an Assumption senior who earned the 2017 Fred Mitchell Award as the top placekicker for all college football divisions and went on to earn 2018 All-Southeast Conference honors while a graduate student at Louisiana State last fall.

MEN’S SWIMMING
ERIE — Freshman Chase Bietz (Clearfield) swam the second leg for Penn State Behrend’s winning 200-yard medley relay team that jumpstarted a 125-81 win over visiting Penn State Altoona Saturday.
The Titan foursome posted a 1:37.87 time.
Bietz swam exhibition in the 200 breaststroke (2:12.56) and 200 individual medley (1:59.12), both of which were fastest in those races.
The Senior Day win padded the Lions’ record to 5-1.

EDINBORO — Sophomore Tate Swanson (Clearfield) turned in a 22.03-second third split for the Clarion 200-yard freestyle team that claimed first place with a 1:27.26 effort in closing out a 103-91 win over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Edinboro Friday.
Swanson also touched third in the 50 free in 23.51 and fourth in the 100 free in 50.51.
Sophomore Hayden Steiner (Clearfield) placed fourth in the 50 free in 23.74 and 500 free in 5:27.70 after anchoring the 200 medley foursome’s second-place finish (1:43.27) with a 22.57 split.
Both competed in three individual events Saturday at the 2019 Senior Recognition Western Pennsylvania Invitational hosted by Pitt.
Swanson was ninth in the 100 free (50.52), 11th in the 200 free (1:53.77) and 13th in his first 200 individual medley (2:10.89), while Stiner was 12th in the 200 free (51.85), 15thx in the 200 IM (2:14.14) and 17thx in the 100 butterfly (58.31).
Swanson also had a 22.57 split for the Golden Eagle 200 free relay quartet that finished eighth in 1:28.19.
Clarion’s dual meet record is 2-4.

NEW WILMINGTON — Senior Michael Spencer (Clearfield) earned points in four events for undefeated Westminster in a 170.5-117.5 victory over visiting Saint Vincent Saturday.
He placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.36 seconds and tied for fourth in the 100 free in 51.18 while swimming the anchor legs for two Titan ‘B’ relay teams.
His 21.64 split stopped the clock at 1:29.76 for the 200 medley foursome that finished second, and his 21.53 leg gave the 200 free quartet a time of 1:40.89 for third place.
Westminster is 5-0, with two of the wins at the expense of Presidents’ Athletic Conference opponents.

WRESTLING
WILLIAMSPORT — Once-beaten junior 197-pounder Travis Ogden (Clearfield) won by injury default in Lycoming’s 35-15 win over King’s in Lamade Gym Saturday.
The bout ended after 45 seconds when King’s John Hooper was unable to continue.
Ogden is 17-1 with a 16-match winning streak.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
GREENSBURG — Junior Cody Spaid (Clearfield) was instrumental in Pitt-Greensburg picking up two wins in three Allegheny Mountain League games last week.
He registered his first double-double of the season with 20 points and a game-high 10 rebounds in the Bobcats’ 77-70 home victory over D’Youville Jan. 21. He also led the team in assists with four and had one block.
Against Pitt-Bradford Saturday, Spaid parlayed eight points and six rebounds with a team-high six assists, two steals and one block as the Bobcats (6-13, 3-9 AMCC) triumphed 91-68.
Spaid wound up with team-highs of five rebounds and five assists to go with six points in Wednesday’s 92-79 loss to La Roche at Pittsburgh.
A starter in every game, Spaid tops the Bobcats in rebounds (120), assists (60) and blocks (20). He has totaled 139 points and made 15 steals.

DUBOIS — Junior center Bernard Rauckhorst (Curwensville) scored six points and grabbed three rebounds against Penn State York Saturday in the second of two Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference road games for Penn State DuBois.
The Lions lost that game 95-58 after being nipped 92-90 at Penn State New Kensington Wednesday to fall to 0-12 in the PSUAC and 4-14 overall.
Freshman guard Josh Terry (Curwensville) also played in both games with no stats.
Rauckhorst has 63 points, 48 rebounds, four assists, two steals and five blocks in 17 games.
Terry shows 40 points, 25 rebounds, 10 assists, seven steals and six blocks in 11 games.

MEN’S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
EDINBORO — Slippery Rock sophomore Ethan McGinnis (Clearfield) posted a personal-best in the high jump by clearing 1.85 meters (6 feet, ¾ inches) for fifth place at the Al Hall Freedom Games hosted by Edinboro Saturday.
He also had recorded a season-best 13 meters (42 feet, 7¾ inches) in the triple jump for another fifth-place finish.
McGinnis qualified for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships in both events.

LEWISBURG — Pitt-Johnstown sophomore Mason Royer (Clearfield) lowered his personal record for the 60-meter hurdles to 9.17 seconds at the Bucknell University Open and Multi Saturday.
He placed 15th among 24 hurdlers from 13 teams.
