CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield school board is considering improvements to the tennis courts at the Clearfield Area Junior-Senior High School and to the outdoor basketball court at the Clearfield Area Elementary School.
During Monday night’s buildings, finance and activities committee meeting, Superintendent Terry Struble presented a proposal from Nagle Athletic Surfaces with the total associated costs not to exceed $83,105 through the COSTARS program.
According to Struble, they had previously considered various options, including replacing and or moving the tennis courts at the CAJSHS, which would have been very costly. However, Nagle has presented a solution that would hold up for four to five years.
He said Nagle would thoroughly clean the court’s surface and existing cracks, then fill the cracks to be sanded and coated before color surfacing. “They’ve had a good solution, a good outcome with this.”
New tennis courts, he said, would cost around $500,000 to $600,000 and would only last 10 years or so, before there would be a need for improvements. He said the administration has recommended moving forward with Nagle’s surface improvements.
Struble said if approved, Nagle would complete the work at the beginning of summer following the tennis season, and the courts would be closed down for a brief period. Of course, he said the work schedule would be weather dependent.
Nagle also showed the district it’s other work, including on school playgrounds. He said they can put down a basketball key, hop scotch, etc. at CAES, but in a colorful alignment, making it “bright and cheerful” for the children.
Struble said the district hasn’t responded to Nagle with specifics for the court’s layout, but did note that it could be done for a relatively “moderate price.”
