CURWENSVILLE – A local Boy Scout is looking to bring GaGa Ball to Curwensville.
At Monday’s Curwensville Borough Council meeting, resident Jadon Doel presented his plans for an Eagle Scout project in Irvin Park. Doel said he is planning to build a GaGa Ball pit in the park, near the tennis courts.
According to GaGa Center’s Web site, GaGa Ball gets its name from the Hebrew phrase “touch-touch.” The game is described as a “kinder, gentler version” of dodgeball.
The game is played in an octagonal pit, where players use foam balls to “tag” each other below the knees. The players must constantly move to avoid being hit and eliminated. The last player in the pit wins; the game can be played one-on-one or with teams.
Doel said he will remove the sod and use sand to fill his pit and erect fences to create a 309 square-foot are to play. He said he is selling Mabel’s pizzas and coupons for the Blue Cow. He said he is hoping to have his fundraising completed and start his project by spring.
The council said they would like to check to make sure the project will work with the master site plan for the park.
Also, at the meeting, Martha Tozier discussed plans for the 50th annual Curwensville Days celebration. Tozier said last summer was a very good celebration and about $1,000 was donated to various organizations within the community.
Tozier said this year’s Curwensville Days would be July 14-20. She said to commemorate the 50th year, the committee is looking to get more vendors and add a “Battle of the Bands” as well as a “Battle of The Barrel” competition between fire departments.
She said there’s also plans to add a ukulele competition, as the area schools have been teaching the students how to play the ukulele. She said the committee is also hoping to add a fireworks display.
Tozier said the plans are still in the works, but they’re hoping to have a bigger and better celebration this year.
