CURWENSVILLE – On paper it looked like somewhat of a mismatch at Patton Hall in Curwensville Monday night.
The visiting Union Damsels came in with a 7-4 overall record while the Lady Tide had a 2-6 mark on the 2018-19 campaign.
In the end though, forget what the “paper” said, as the Lady Tide earned a hard fought, up and down game 52-47.
It was a back and forth the first eight minutes, with the Tide taking the lead, 14-13, at the end of the quarter on a two pointer by senior Brittney Wagner.
However, the big news after the first quarter was that Curwensville’s leading scorer Madison Weber drew three personal fouls, putting the Lady Tide offense possibly in a bit of a bind.
Coach Bob Desmett of Curwensville decided to roll the dice and give Weber a bunch of second quarter minutes in perhaps a do or die situation.
Not only did Weber not pick up a fourth foul, but she also scored six of the Lady Tide’s eight second frame points to keep Curwensville out in front at the break 22-21.
The Lady Tide came out of the halftime break showing Union that the first half was no fluke, as Curwensville outscored the Damsels from Rimersburg 16-10 to hold a 38-31 edge going into the final stanza.
The third quarter was fueled with the Lady Tide going on a 9-0 run to start the quarter, and at one time had a 10 point lead, twice, 31-21 and 35-25.
Weber, once again, sparked Curwensville’s third quarter effort with seven points while teammate Briana Swindell tallied five.
Union would rally in the fourth, cutting the Curwensville margin to as little as three points a few times thanks to freshman Dominika Logue who scored 12 of her game high 26 points in the final quarter.
Actually, Logue scored 21 points in the second half to keep it close for the Damsels.
Although the Lady Tide didn’t shoot all that well from the free throw line on the night, 12 of 28, it was the free throw line that enabled Curwensville to pull out the big win.
The Tide took 17 free throws over the final eight minutes, making just seven, but those seven points went a long way toward the victory.
Junior Tarah Jacobson paced the Curwensville offense with seven points in the fourth, four from the line, and three on a trey.
Weber, who did eventually foul out with less than three minutes to play, had 16 for Curwensville as Jacobson and Swindell each added 11.
Helping out Logue, the Damsels had senior Bryn Davis scoring 12 on the night.
Union was just 6 of 17 from the charity stripe.
A very pleased Desmett said afterwards, “It sure was a nail biter the whole way. But that win last week against Harmony gave the girls some confidence that showed tonight.”
Desmett followed with, “We tried to slow the pace down tonight and didn’t want to get into an up tempo game with Union and I thought we executed fairly well, which we always talk to the girls about.”
In the junior varsity game it was Union beating the Lady Tide by a score of 32-29.
The Lady Tide (3-6) are back in action Tuesday, traveling to St. Marys to play Elk County Catholic with the JV game beginning at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
