INDIANA — Senior Blake Passarelli became the eighth Curwensville Area High School wrestler to reach the 100-win milestone on his way to finishing second at 126 pounds in the 14th annual Harry “Bo” Wood Tournament Saturday.
Passarelli hit triple figures with his quarterfinal victory, a 13-2 major decision over Luke Potts of Chartiers Valley.
The No. 1 seed had pinned Indiana’s Daniel McAnulty at 1:21 in the opening round.
After decisioning Zane Grinnell of Commodore Perry 11-5 in the semifinals, Passarelli was denied the title by Jack Bruce of Blairsville.
The state-ranked No. 2 seed’s first-period takedown was the difference in the 3-2 bout.
“That first takedown is huge between state-caliber kids,” Curwensville coach Dean Swatsworth said. “Blake let him up in the third period but couldn’t get in on a good shot.”
Passarelli’s is 13-2 this season for a career record of 101-28 that is tied for sixth best in the Golden Tide Century Club.
“I’d like to congratulate Blake, because he joined an elite group of kids,” Swatsworth said. “That’s an awesome career mark to hit.”
Freshman 113-pounder Spencer Hoover and senior 160-pounder Cole Bressler also were runners-up while sophomore 170-pounder Jake McCracken placed fourth as the Golden Tide accumulated 78 points to wind up seventh among 17 teams from PIAA Districts 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.
Hoover advanced to the finals with wins over fourth seed Michael Stanley of Cranberry and No. 1 seed Dylan Mayer of Taylor Allderdice before being pinned by No. 2 seed Jessie Galioto of West Mifflin.
Bressler, seeded fourth, pinned Devin Witmer of Blairsville and Mitchell Romese of South Park and defeated Shaun Berzonski of Conemaugh Township for his shot at a championship. However, No. 2 seed Dylan McAnulty of Indiana proved too tough and won by fall.
Golden Tide sophomore Jake McCracken won three of five matches to place fourth at 170.
Duane Brady fell one win shy of placing with his 2-2 record at 152.
“Overall, it was a good tournament for us,” Swatsworth said. “We still have to work on little things we’re doing wrong.”
Curwensville resumes its dual meet schedule Tuesday when Brookville visits Patton Hall for a 7 p.m. start.
With two champs and six other placewinners, host Indiana won the team title with 163.5 points.
