MEADVILLE — The Clearfield Bison wrestling team took their annual trek to Meadville on Friday to compete at the 40th Annual Tool City Tournament at Meadville High School.
They had a solid opening night sending three in to Saturday morning’s semifinals, seven are still alive in the consolations and one was eliminated from the 25-team tourney.
The Bison ended the first day of action in eighth place with 65.5 points. Brockway leads the team race with 96 points.
Assuring themselves of at least a top-6 finish by going 2-0 on Friday were two freshman, Luke Freeland at 126 and Mark McGonigal at 160, and senior Avry Gisewhite at 285.
Freeland (7-5) earned bonus points for the Bison in both of his matches. He opened with a 14-2 major decision over Girard’s Ethan Herman, and followed that up with a 3:38 fall over Carsyn Good of Mo Valley. Freeland will face Williamsport’s Carter Dawson in his semifinal match-up.
McGonigal (10-3) made quick work of Ft. LeBoeuf’s Hayden Ford in his first match, then held on for a 6-4 win over Anthony Robinson of Williamsport in the quarterfinals. He’ll square off with Noah Bash of Brockway with a spot in Saturday evening’s final on the line.
Gisewhite (7-5) got by Franklin’s Josh Netties 3-1 in his opening bout, then defeated Kaleb Dunlap of Titusville 5-2 to advance. He’ll face Jordan Schell of Girard in the semis.
Making it to round four of the wrestlebacks after losing in the quarterfinals and needing one more win to make it on the medal stand were freshman Nolan Barr (5-4) at 113, seniors Caleb Freeland (10-2) at 145 and Brett Zattoni (2-8)at 182, and sophomore Nick Domico (7-5) at 195.
After picking up either a first round win, or a consolation round win and making it to the third round of consolations were freshman Karson Kline (8-4) at 120, and seniors Jude Pallo (4-2) at 138 and Cole Smay (2-6) at 170.
Going 0-2 on the night and being eliminated was junior Peyton Smay (2-8) at 132.
