CURWENSVILLE – Trying to pick up its first win of the season, the Curwensville Golden Tide boys basketball team hosted the Glendale Vikings Wednesday night in Moshannon Valley League (MVL) action.
After a very competitive first half by the winless Tide the second half wasn’t so kind, as Curwensville was knocked off by the Vikings 66-45.
Tide head coach Matt Wassil said afterwards, “We just came out flat in the second half for some reason and got outscored 24 to seven in the third quarter, that made the difference.”
Glendale did take a first quarter edge over the Golden Tide 22-16 thanks to eight points by Viking sophomore Ryan Sinclair. Senior Christian Bakaysa of Curwensville also tallied eight first quarter points.
Making it a close game going into halftime, the Tide picked it up on the defensive end in the second eight minutes by taking the quarter nine to six to trail by only three at the break, 28-25.
Wassil, for the most part, liked the defensive effort saying, “I thought we did a better job on defense in the second quarter, but the problem is we need to be more consistent on that end of the floor throughout the game.”
Then a dreadful third frame as the Vikings opened the third going on a 15-0 run to push its lead to 43-25 with 4:30 to play before the start of the final eight minutes.
Bakaysa finally ended the Glendale run with a bucket at the 4:03 mark, but the damage was already done at that point.
Curwensville did play a competitive fourth quarter, losing that eight minutes just 14-13, but the third quarter damage was too much for the Tide to overcome.
Bakaysa paced the Tide offense with 20 points while freshman guard Ty Terry added 12 tallies on four three-pointers.
Jack Potutschnig scored 21 points for Glendale, 11 coming in the third period, with Sinclair adding 20 and Jacob Jasper tossing in 13.
Finally Wassil added, “Again, it was a tough third quarter for the second straight game. We got beat up some on the inside tonight in the third quarter and Glendale took advantage of that. We will make some adjustments though.”
In the junior varsity game it was Curwensville winning big over the Vikings 47-28. Trevor Lansberry had 25 points for the Tide with Adam Miller netting 10.
Next up for the Tide, now 0-5 (0-2 in the MVL), will be a road trip to play Leechburg on Friday. JV tips off at 6 pm with the varsity to follow.
Glendale, 2-1 (2-1in the MVL), is home on Thursday against Juniata Valley.
