PHILIPSBURG – The Clearfield boys basketball team got back on the winning track Monday night with a victory over Philipsburg-Osceola on the Mounties’ home floor, 64-47, in Mountain League action.
And it was another one of those games were the final score doesn’t tell the entire story.
Sure, the Bison jumped out to a 15-11 lead after one quarter thanks to nine points by Clearfield junior Cade Walker.
And sure, Clearfield outscored the Mounties 20-9 in the second eight minutes to take a very comfortable 35-20 margin into the halftime break.
But wait a second, a fierce third quarter comeback by Philipsburg-Osceola had the Mounties knocking on the front door with a possible early season upset win.
With terrific scoring balance, the Mounties went on a 13-2 run in the third to make a real game out of this one.
Philipsburg-Osceola got to within four of the Bison, 37-33, with about four and half minutes to play in the third.
The Mounties got even closer with 1:50 to go in the third at 42-39.
This all happened because the Mounties outscored Clearfield 21-11 in the third frame.
Clearfield did, however, put the game away with an 18-6 fourth quarter edge over the Mounties as Bison sophomore Karson Rumsky had six points in the final eight minutes.
Nate Glunt, Clearfield head coach said after the game, “Give credit to Philipsburg, they played tough and they played hard, especially on defense. I knew it was coming though, because we saw them a few times this summer, playing the same way.”
Glunt then added, “We have had a tough early season schedule with playing five games in 11 days, but we hung in there. Both teams really wanted this one and I am thankful that we came out on top.”
Walker led all scorers with 24 points while Rumsky with 16 and Keagan Hess with 11 helped the Bison cause.
Philipsburg-Osceola was led by Carson Jones and Tyler Doyle, off of the bench, with 12 each.
In junior varsity action the Mounties defeated the Bison by a score of 42-38.
Clearfield is now 4-1 overall and 2-1 in Mountain League play while the Mounties slipped to 1-4 and 0-3 in league action.
Clearfield returns to the hardwood with a home game on Friday against Tyrone.
