The Penn State DuBois Women’s Basketball Team hosted Penn State Greater Allegheny this weekend in their final game before a much needed holiday break. The DuBois Lady Lions came out with an explosion as Maddie Sprankle (Johnstown, PA) put up 8 points with 2 three pointers in the first quarter. DuBois would take the first stretch of the game in front of their home crowd with an exciting 16-10 lead.
In the second quarter Greater Allegheny looked to push back a little harder, and Tina Clybourn helped bring some life to Greater Allegheny with her 11 second quarter points. A balanced attack however kept DuBois in the lead as they would go to the locker room at the half up 31-24.
Greater Allegheny new they had to make some adjustments at the half, and Coach Lewis and his DuBois team knew that pressure would be coming. In the third quarter Greater Allegheny forced 4 turnovers from DuBois, and had a big lift from their bench players. Brandy Taylor scored 10 third quarter points for Greater Allegheny to make up a lot of ground, and overcome the DuBois Lady Lions. Still very much in the game however, DuBois wasn’t shaken as they would go into the final 10 minutes of play down by 3.
Melody Young (Eldred, PA) would get things started off on the right foot for DuBois to start the fourth with her quick jumper. Then with another Sprankle three, and Young knocking down another jumper, DuBois took the lead back just like that.
The lead would change back and forth for the entire fourth quarter with aggressive defense from both benches. With 35 seconds remaining in play, Greater Allegheny would hit a jumper to go up by 1, 70-69. Coach Lewis called a timeout to get his girls in position for the next possession. Out of the timeout however, a DuBois turnover led to another made shot for Greater Allegheny. DuBois, now down by only 3 points still had 14 seconds on the clock, but another forced turnover led DuBois to have to foul. Greater Allegheny would knock down both free throws, and with only 4 seconds left DuBois would not be able to get a shot off, and Greater Allegheny would go on to win, 74-69.
Sprankle would end the game with 17 points, Kristen Williams (Sugar Grove, PA) would end the night with 6 assists, and Melody Young would finish with a double-double on 13 points and 15 rebounds.
