WORCESTER, Mass. — Worcester Polytechnic Institute senior kicker/punter Spencer Herrington (Clearfield) has been named New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Special Teams Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season.
He is one of only three repeaters on the 30-player 2018 All-NEWMAC Team announced last week following the conclusion of the conference’s second season.
Herrington, who was selected NEWMAC Special Teams Athlete of the Week three times, topped conference kickers in points (66) and extra points (30-for-30) and tied for the lead in field goals (12-for-15) with a long of 42 yards.
He punted 41 times for a 35-yard average, booming 55-yarders twice and 54-yarders twice. WPI opponents were forced to start drives inside their 20 on 17 occasions.
The Engineers finished fifth in the NEWMAC at 4-3 and were 6-4 overall.
Herrington also was one of five Engineers selected to the Google Cloud Football Academic All-District I Team as voted on by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
All advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
Herrington’s career totals are 141 points on 75 PATs without a miss and 22 field goals in 27 attempts plus 113 punts for a 34.4 average.
An aerospace engineering major, he developed a mobile website for the Worcester Art Museum for his Interactive Qualifying Project.
His Major Qualifying Project was titled “Detection and Estimation of a Plume with an Unmanned Terrain Vehicle.”

WILLIAMSPORT — Lycoming senior center Brad Stubbs (Curwensville) was selected to the All-Middle Atlantic Conference First Team for the second year in a row in voting by the 11 head coaches.
The 6-2, 281-pounder, a team captain, was one of five offensive linemen receiving first-team recognition.
In all, seven Warriors were honored after a 4-4 finish in the MAC, with five landing on the 17-player first unit.
Stubbs was named to the All-MAC Second Team after his sophomore season.
His string of consecutive starts at center reached 31 Saturday in Lycoming’s first appearance in the bowl series between the Middle Atlantic Conference and Centennial Conference and first postseason game since 2008.
The Warriors held leads of 13-0 in the first quarter and 20-7 in the second period but failed to score in the second half and lost 21-20 to host Franklin & Marshall (8-3) in front of 1,213 fans at Shadek Stadium.
Stubbs ended his outstanding career with 36 starts in 38 games, including seven as a freshman offensive tackle in 2015 after transferring from Bloomsburg University and sitting out the 2014 season.
Junior Nate Lash (Clearfield) was a backup offensive linemen with four appearances for the Warriors, who wound up 5-6.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
GENEVA, N.Y. — After being named to the All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Third-Team earlier in the week, Penn State Behrend freshman goalkeeper Madi Jones (Clearfield) recorded 10 saves against Tufts at William Smith College Nov. 10, but the Jumbos cashed two shots in the first 15 minutes to end the Lions’ season, 2-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Championships.
Senior midfielder Tessa Munshower (Clearfield) also saw action for the AMCC champion Lions, who entered the tournament 13-6 and ranked No. 8 in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Great Lake Region poll but managed only six shots, with just one on goal.
Tufts (11-6-1), which launched 16 shots, then lost 1-0 in double overtime to William Smith, which advanced to the semifinals of the 32-team tourney with two more wins last weekend.
Jones was the Lions’ starting goalie in every game and finished her rookie season with a 0.82 goals-against average and eight shutouts, plus four combined shutouts.
She was credited with 54 saves on 70 shots in 1,746.24 minutes.
Munshower had one assist and one shot, on goal, in 11 appearances.
A four-year letterwinner, Munshower played in 50 games with three goals and four assists for 10 points for 29 shots, 12 on goal.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
GREENSBURG — Junior forward/center Cody Spaid (Clearfield) averaged just under 10 points and six rebounds as Pitt-Greensburg opened the season with a home win before dropping two games in the Greg Richards ’08 Memorial Classic hosted by Allegheny College last week.
The 6-7 Bobcat scored 10 points with a game-high eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal in the 81-70 victory over Washington & Jefferson in Chambers Hall Nov. 13.
He followed up with another 10-point performance plus three rebounds, two assists and two steals in a 92-80 loss to Allegheny Friday and came through with nine points, six rebounds, two assists, a game-high four blocks and one steal in an 80-77 loss to Bluffton (Ohio) Saturday.
Spaid played in 38 games, including 25 starts, as a freshman and sophomore, totaling 269 points for a 7.1 average, grabbing 225 missed shots for a 5.9 average and had 41 assists, 36 blocks and 16 steals.

WRESTLING
DEKALB, Ill. — Sophomore 184-pounder Shae Bloom (Curwensville) pinned Max Demann in 2:33 in Clarion’s 44-3 rout of Harper (Ill.) College at the Northern Illinois Huskie Duals Saturday.
He did not compete in the Golden Eagles’ two earlier meets, losses to Utah Valley 25-12 and Northern Illinois 27-18.
Bloom sports a 6-1 record with five falls for the Golden Eagles, who are 2-2 in duals.

SALEM, Va. — Junior 197-pounder Travis Ogden (Clearfield) won both of his bouts for Lycoming at the VBR Sports Southeast Duals in the Salem Civic Center Saturday.
The Warriors, ranked No. 20 in NCAA Division III, defeated Averett (Va.) 32-15 and Southern Virginia 54-0 around losses to two undefeated teams, 26-20 to Ferrum (Va.) and 33-14 to No. 6 Mount Union (Ohio).
Ogden pinned Christopher Mohr of Averett at 2:51 and shut out Antavian Leary of Ferrum 7-0 to improve his record to 6-1.
Sophomore 141-pounder Josiah McClarren (Clearfield) pinned Averett’s Tony Blackman at 2:11 in an exhibition match.

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Freshman Luke McGonigal (Clearfield) earned points for Lock Haven with wins over two SUNY-Binghamton opponents as the No. 16-ranked Bald Eagles piled up 136.5 points to beat out host Army with 101.5 points and six other teams in the Black Knight Invite Sunday.
McGonigal, wrestling up a weight at 197 pounds, sandwiched a fall at the 6:09 mark against Anthony DePrez and a 10-5 decision over Alex Melikian between losses to a pair of Army placewinners.
He was edged 10-8 by eventual champion Alex Hopkins in the opening round and major decisioned 12-2 by No. 4 seed Bennett Paulson in the elimination bracket quarterfinals. Paulson went on to place third.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Junior Claire Mikesell (Clearfield) and freshman Paige Mikesell (Clearfield) of Indiana University of Pennsylvania had Top 10 finishes at the Magnus Cup Invitational in Busbey Natatorium on the Cleveland State campus last week.
Claire Mikesell tied for ninth place in the 50-yard breaststroke preliminaries with a time of 30.24 seconds to qualify for the A final, where she moved up to seventh by touching in 30 seconds flat.
Paige Mikesell made the 100 individual medley A final by placing eighth in the prelims in 58.91 and then wound up 10th in 1:00.85.
Those events were the first for the Crimson Hawk sisters this season.
They swam the first two legs, Paige with a 54.03 leadoff split and Claire following with a 53.88 split, for the IUP ‘A’ 400 freestyle relay team that finished 15th among 40 foursomes in 3:32.27.
Clair Mikesell placed 31st in the 100 breast C final in 1:04.83 after qualifying tied for 34th in 1:07.33, 40th in the 100 free D final in 53.78 after qualifying 31st in 53.78 and 56th in the 50 free prelims in 24.78.
She registered a 24.67 third leg for the ‘A’ 200 free quartet that finished 18th in 1:37.41, a 1:05.64 second split for the ‘B’ 400 medley foursome that placed 27th in 3:57.14 and a 29.88 second leg for the ‘B’ 200 medley team that finished 28th in 1:49.86.
Paige Mikesell finished 13th in the 100 butterfly ‘B’ final in 55.87 after posting an NCAA B cut time of 55.75 in the prelims, 30th among 106 entries in the 100 free C final in 54.07 after qualifying 28th in 52.95 and 34thx in the 200 individual medley ‘D’ final in 2:08.43 after finishing 27th in the prelims in 2:09.23.
She turned in a 54.82 fly leg for the 400 medley ‘A’ team that claimed ninth place in 3:48.60 and a 1:55.67 leadoff split for the 800 free ‘B’ foursome that wound up 17th in 7:52.45.
