WORCESTER, Mass. — Senior kicker/punter Spencer Herrington (Clearfield) was named New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Special Teams Athlete of the Week for the third time this season as a result of booting two field goals and two extra points in Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s 20-17 win over Norwich Saturday.
A Senior Day crowd of 1,501 at Alumni Stadium saw the Engineers finish 6-4 for their fourth consecutive winning record, making Herrington and his 15 teammates honored prior to kickoff as only the eighth senior class to depart with that honor.
Both of Herrington’s field goals, one a career-long 42 yards, came in the second quarter as WPI built a 20-7 halftime lead en route to their fourth victory in seven NEWMAC games.
He also averaged 37 yards for five punts, including a 54-yarder.
Herrington closes the regular season as the No. 1 NEWMAC placekicker with 66 points as he was perfect on 30 PAT tries and nailed 12 of 15 field goals.
He launched 53 punts for a 35-yard average, his longest a pair of 55-yarders.
After making only six appearances as a freshman and sophomore, Herrington took over the kicking duties last fall and ended his career with 141 points and a 34.4 average for 113 punts.
He was true on all 75 PATs and made 22 of 27 field goal attempts.

GROVE CITY — Senior linebacker Dusty Maines (Clearfield) was one of two Thiel defenders with 11 tackles in his final appearance for the Tomcats in their 42-15 Presidents’ Athletic Conference loss to Grove City Saturday.
The 35th annual Mercer County Cup clash attracted 1,800 fans to Robert E. Thorn Field, and Maines starred for Thiel (0-10, 0-9 PAC) with five solo stops and six assists.
Maines started every game and led the Tomcat defense throughout the season and wound up with 93 tackles, including 58 solo efforts. He was credited with three tackles, one a sack, for losses of eight yards and one forced fumble.
In 30 games during his four-year career, Maines recorded 76 solo tackles and 43 assists for a 119 total, with six tackles for losses of 19 yards.

DALLAS, Pa. — Senior center Brad Stubbs (Curwensville) and his Lycoming teammates extended their season and denied host Misericordia a share of the Middle Atlantic Conference championship with a 21-14 upset in front of 1,300 fans at Mangelsdorf Field Saturday.
The Warriors were outgained 331-252 and had to overcome four turnovers to level their record at 5-5.
Lycoming wound up one of five teams with 4-4 records in the conference and had the edge in the tiebreakers to earn the third seed for the four-year-old MAC-Centennial Conference Series.
The Warriors will travel to Lancaster Saturday to take on Franklin & Marshall (7-3).

MEN’S SWIMMING
BEREA, Ohio — Freshman Chase Bietz (Clearfield) broke the pool record for the 200-yard breaststroke and also swam a leg for a victorious relay team as visiting Penn State Behrend defeated Baldwin Wallace 130-86 in a non-conference meet at the Lou Higgins Center Saturday.
Bietz breezed to a six-second victory in the individual race with a personal-best 2:09.74 clocking that was his third time under the Lions’ freshman record.
Earlier, he turned in a 26.93-second breaststroke split for the 200 medley relay foursome that won in 1:40.16.
Bietz has wins in eight individual races and four relays for the 2-1 Lions.

BLOOMSBURG — Sophomores Tate Swanson (Clearfield) and Hayden Steiner (Clearfield) were on relay teams that placed high for Clarion in a 145-58 loss to Bloomsburg Saturday.
Swanson touched in 50.25 seconds on the third leg for the Golden Eagle ‘A’ 400-yard freestyle quartet that finished second in 3:17.53, while Steiner had a 21.86 split for the ‘A’ 200 medley foursome that ended up third in 1:43.83.
Swanson also picked up points in the 200 butterfly by placing fourth in 2:14.19. He was sixth in the 200 freestyle in 1:59.30.
Swanson placed sixth in the 50 free in 23.30 and 100 free in 50.64.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
BUCHANNON, W.Va. — Freshman Paige Mikesell (Clearfield) was a doublewinner and junior Claire Mikesell (Clearfield) also triumphed as undefeated Indiana University of Pennsylvania splashed past host West Virginia Wesleyan 137-68 Friday.
Paige touched the wall in 2:13.85 in her first 200-yard individual medley race and posted a 26.52-second butterfly leg for the ‘A’ 200 medley relay team that was victorious in 1:51.44.
Claire won the 100 free in 55.20 and registered a 31.04 breaststroke split for the ‘B’ 200 medley unit that took second in 1:53.21.
Paige has won six individual races and been a part of four relay wins for the 4-0 Crimson Hawks.
Clair has two individual wins and three relay wins.

WRESTLING
WASHINGTON, Pa. — Junior 197-pounder Travis Ogden (Clearfield) won four of five matches to claim fifth place for champion Lycoming at the 14-team Washington & Jefferson Invitational Saturday.
Sophomore 141-pounder Josiah McClarren (Clearfield) also contributed points for the Warriors with three wins in five bouts.
Ogden, who was on the honorable mention list in the d3wrestle.com preseason rankings, opened with a 9-1 major decision over Garrett Mitchel of Muskingum before coming out on the short end of a wild 15-12 bout against Waynesburg’s Ken Burris, who went on to finish fourth.
Ogden rebounded to beat Lycoming teammates Christian Wachter 6-3 and Bradley Miccio 3-2 and, in the fifth-place match, pin Austin Smith of Heidelberg at 1:19.
After being pinned by Devin Wood of Thomas More at 1:42, McClarren reeled off three wins in succession, majoring Dante Lapitan of Wheeling Jesuit 13-2, blanking Darren Rich of Lycoming 7-0 and tech falling Josh Kuslock of Waynesburg 18-3.
His tourney run ended with a 5-2 loss to eventual sixth placer Matt Lascola of Waynesburg.
Ogden entered the season with a 30-15 career record.
Lycoming amassed 162 points to outdistance Heidelberg (135.5) and 12 other teams.
