CLEARFIELD – If you tuned into local radio over the past 50-plus years in central Pennsylvania, you likely heard the voice of Bob E. Day.
Day, the long-time and beloved Clearfield radio broadcasting icon, has passed away. He was 71 years old.
The announcement was made with a “heavy heart” on WOKW 102.9 FM’s Web site and Facebook page Thursday afternoon.
Day grew up just outside Detroit, Mich., and came to Clearfield to work in radio. He first went on-air Dec. 14, 1967 at WCPA-AM in Clearfield.
“I won my first radio T-shirt from Bob when I was 8,” shared Yvonne Harley Lehman, the station’s president/sales manager.
“I listened to him like the rest of Clearfield County – daily on the radio for years.”
Day joined WOKW in 2007 after four decades at WCPA, and Lehman said they “couldn’t have been happier” to have the icon on their airwaves.
Day was the jovial voice of local news and high school sports. He also hosted his very own show, Sunday Super Gold, every Sunday; it featured oldies radio classics and trivia from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
“… Before we all knew it, it was like we had been together forever,” Lehman shared. “We are a family at that little studio on River Road. Today, our family is heartbroken.”
Off-the-air Day was the upbeat emcee and disc jockey at various community events for many years. He’s also remembered for greeting people with a big wave and a friendly smile.
“We are all blessed and better … for having a chance to work with Mr. Bob E. Day,” Lehman shared. “He lived a good, honest life … and was a true example of living a Christian life.”
So far as this Sunday’s oldies show, Lehman said “it will go on” as a tribute to Day, and she hopes there will also be a “great reception for him in Heaven.”
