DUBOIS – A DuBois man has been accused of trying to blow up a home by leaving the gas on in the residence.
DuBois City police say David E. Olewinski, 50, turned the gas on in his home on Sept. 4. After his wife smelled the gas, she asked him why he turned it on. He said he didn’t remember doing it.
Further investigation revealed that Olewinski told someone he was going to burn the house down and was overheard by a juvenile witness. Neighbors were able to smell the gas outside the residence, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
The next day, the victim reported to police that she and Olewinski were separating and as he was packing his things, he assaulted her.
Olewinski allegedly pushed a crossbow into her and asked if she wanted “to die today.” He then reportedly struck her with a package of arrows, causing her to sustain injuries to her back and cuts to her arm.
Before he left, he punched her twice on the side of the head and lip, according to police. He then fled the scene in her vehicle.
After she reported the assault, the victim told police about the incident with the gas the previous night.
When he was taken into custody, Olewinski was found to have marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to the report.
Olewinski is charged with a felony count of risking a catastrophe, and misdemeanor counts of simple assault, terroristic threats, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, as well as a summary harassment.
He is incarcerated in lieu of $25,000 bail with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Friday during centralized court in District Judge Pat Ford’s office.
