The Mahaffey House Hotel, a very large wooden structure, was located on Market Street where the fire hall now stands. It was built c1880 and destroyed by fire in 1920.
George M. Ferguson was 37 years old when he married Lizzie G. Mahaffey in 1882. George was a man of great personal charm.
He was a good mixer and well-known throughout the area as a former county Registrar and Recorder. He liked people and was respected by all who knew him.
With these evident qualities, and observing his conservative nature and capacity for responsibility in a public position, Lizzie’s father selected George as the first manager of the Mahaffey House Hotel.
Ferguson remained in complete charge of the hotel until his death December of 1897.
