Thursday, Aug.9
Crawfishing:
10 a.m. – in front of Park Office
“You get a line and I’ll get a pole…” Learn the art of crawfishing using a line and a pole. Lines and poles (and bait) provided. If you are 16 or older, you will need to have a current PA fishing license to actively participate.
Friday, Aug. 10
S’mores and Sustainability:
8 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
Sustainability has become a buzz word in modern society—but what exactly does it mean? Why is it important? How can every person live a more sustainable life? And, are the ingredients of s’mores sustainably sourced? If you are interested in the answers to these questions and would enjoy munching on s’mores, come join us.
Saturday, Aug. 11
Hike the Laurel Run and CCC Trails:
9 a.m. – near CCC Museum/spillway
Hike along Laurel Run on this guided foray through the tornado area and more. Return on the CCC trail. Two miles—bring water and wear comfortable shoes.
NavStar on the Beach:
1 p.m. – Beach
The moon is new tonight (dark)—a great time for night sky viewing. But what are the “stars” that move across the sky? Some are “NavStar” satellites—used to guide your car, GPS, and so on. We will build a scale model of one in the sand while learning about them.
Amazing Metamorphosis:
4 p.m. – Beach House steps
Imagine growing extra arms or legs on your birthday; or, that you change from living in an aquatic habitat to a terrestrial one. Well, many animals go through metamorphosis and change dramatically. Learn more about these animals and their changes.
The Incredible Journey of the Butterflies:
8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
From across North America, millions of butterflies travel to the mountains of Mexico each year to over-winter. Watch as scientists study this feat of endurance and learn more about their adaptations, life cycles, and what endangers their future.
Sunday, Aug. 12
Tea and Talk:
7 p.m. – Beach House steps
Bring your own cup to sample some sweet fern/mountain mint tea grown right here in the park. Talk is whatever interests you about the environment. The Sunday evening Tea and Talk has been going on for many years—come and be a part of the tradition.
Perseid Meteor Shower Watch:
9 p.m. – Beach House lawn
Bring a blanket, reclining camp chair, or the like to watch for this well-known summer meteor shower. Should be pretty good this year with the moon so new.
