DUBOIS – On Monday night, DuBois City Council voted to approve its Parking Ordinance 1933, as amended.
Mayor Gary Gilbert and Councilman Randy Schmidt were excused from the meeting.
There was some debate prior to the approval of the amended ordinance.
“You know … I just can’t do it yet. I think we need to do some other things first,” said Councilman Jim Aughenbaugh.
Aughenbaugh said he felt DuBois City had experienced improvements with regards to parking and sidewalks without having passed an ordinance.
He also pointed out that city officials had other concerns that should take more precedence over the parking matter.
Councilwoman Diane Bernardo asked if Aughenbaugh had any alternative solutions.
“To expect a perfect ordinance, that affects every situation, is going to be difficult,” said Bernardo.
However, Aughenbaugh reiterated that with all that officials have done so far, they’ve seen improvements throughout the city.
City Solicitor Toni Cherry stepped in to explain that DuBois City could enforce all its ordinances, none of its ordinances and choose enforcement of specific ordinances.
“But, the city can’t enforce an ordinance that doesn’t exist,” she said.
DuBois City officials will notify the public before fully enforcing the more stringent parking ordinance. It was noted notifications will be included with water bills and police will initially issue warnings.
