Bison’s Bumbarger, Glass Named To All-ML Second Team

TYRONE — Clearfield Area High School senior first baseman Seth Bumbarger and junior shortstop Eli Glass were selected by the head coaches to berths on the 2018 All-Mountain League Second Team announced at the annual spring sports banquet in the Tyrone Area High School May 20.

Bumbarger, who is headed for Penn State DuBois to continue his baseball career, hit .333 (17-for-51) and drove in a team-high 18 runs for the Bison, who finished 12-6 after losing to St. Marys, 3-1, in the District 9 Class AAAA championship game.

He and Glass each had two of Clearfield’s six home runs, and Bumbarger was tied for second in doubles with four.

Bumbarger rode a nine-game hitting streak to a season-high .400 batting average through May 1 and had six games with at least two RBIs.

Glass also hit safely in nine consecutive games, seven of them with two or more hits, and wound up with a .500 average.

He was 26-for-52 with a team-high 10 doubles.

Glass, who also was 5-0 with a 1.08 earned run average in eight appearances, drove in 10 runs, scored 20 and drew 16 walks.

After suffering a shoulder injury midway through the season, Glass started three games as the designated hitter and then was moved to left field.

Five players were elevated from the second team last year to first-team honors. Four were standouts for the champion Huntingdon team, pitcher Jared Showalter, catcher Alex Mykut, second baseman Nick Zanic and shortstop Nick Holesa. Zanic was an outfielder in 2017.

Bellefonte outfielder CJ Funk also made that jump.

Designated hitter Landon McDonald of Philipsburg-Osceola repeated on the second team.

Bellefonte pitcher Adam Armstrong, the lone underclassman on the 2017 All-Mountain League First team, also made the second unit.

Mountain League final standings — Huntingdon 12-4-1, Bellefonte 10-4, Clearfield 7-5, Philipsburg-Osceola 7-6, Bald Eagle Area 6-7, Central 5-6-1, Tyrone 4-10, Penns Valley 1-13.
