PENFIELD – Staff members at the Parker Dam State Park have announced the program schedule for June 1-10.
Friday, June 1
Matchless Fire:
8 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
Learn how folks started fires before matches or lighters. Fire by friction, flint and steel and fire by compression will all be explored.
Saturday, June 2
Solar:
3 p.m. – near Beach House
How can we use the sun’s energy? Learn some of the ways that the sun can be helpful to us. There are passive solar, photo-voltaic, solar thermal, concentrating solar and more.
Renewable Energy:
8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
This documentary examines how today’s advanced technologies are working to harness air, water, earth, and fire to produce clean and reliable sources of energy. Learn how to save energy, save money, and do something for the planet. It’s pretty interesting stuff.
Sunday, June 3
Tea and Talk:
7 p.m. – Beach House steps
Bring your own cup to sample some sweet fern/mountain mint tea grown right here in the park. Talk is whatever interests you about the environment. We will discuss solar energy a bit as well. The Sunday evening Tea and Talk has been going on for many years – come and be a part of the tradition.

Pennsylvania Forest History:
8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
The Commonwealth’s forest has changed time and time again. Learn how and why our current forest is much different than the one found by the first European settlers.
Saturday, June 9
Orienteering Basics:
3 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
Could you navigate the landscape without a GPS if necessary? Using a map and compass is a handy skill to possess when technology may not be working. Come learn the skills as we practice outside with a couple of simple challenges.
The CCC Experience:
8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
During a time when a job could scarcely be found, many people across the United States were in desperation. A New Deal program though, provided young men an opportunity to learn and grow, and complete meaningful projects. Their legacy is still seen across this country in the lasting work accomplished by so many in such a trying time.
