DUBOIS – On Monday night, the DuBois City Council renewed its contract with Advanced Disposal. It was a 10-year contract, which included a rate increase.
Advanced Disposal has been the city’s waste disposal service for two terms, or the last 10 years. This is the first-ever rate increase.
“We really can’t move forward five more years without a rate adjustment,” said Ed Yahner of Advanced Disposal.
DuBois City’s new regular waste and recycling rate will be $19.50 per month. It was noted this is the same rate as Reynoldsville Borough and also $2.30 cheaper than Sandy Township.
The senior citizen rate will increase to $12.50 per month. This is $5.30 cheaper than Sandy Township and $5 cheaper than Reynoldsville. These rates will go into effect July 1.
Commercial rates will increase by 10 percent per month, effective April 1.
Additionally, regular waste pick-up will have an automatic increase in the monthly rate by 50 cents every year. The senior citizen monthly rate will automatically increase by $1.50 every year.
Yahner explained that the rate increase was due to laws changing over the years. He specifically pointed out it was mandated to recycle electronic goods.
“Currently, we recycle televisions, and there’s a very high cost to it. We pay 50 cents per pound for it,” he said.
Council and Yahner discussed the possibility of bringing in a cart service. The trash carts would then be picked up by trucks, and it would be at no extra cost to the citizens.
Yahner also indicated that Advanced Disposal has switched some trucks over to compact natural gas. He said disposal trucks are now quieter and have a reduced carbon footprint.
