WEST DECATUR – The Central Intermediate Unit No. 10 held its 19th annual Interscholastic Reading Competition hosted by the Bald Eagle Area School District on March 17.
This scholastic quiz competition is open to teams consisting of fourth, fifth and sixth graders in the CIU No. 10 service area.
The CIU No. 10 serves public, non-public and charter schools in Centre, Clearfield and Clinton counties.
The grand prize-winning team was the Nerds From Narnia, coached by Rebecca Gugino, Mill Hall Elementary, Keystone Central School District.
Of the 29 participating teams, 14 teams qualified for trophy honors. In addition to the grand prize, the following teams placed:
- First Place: Bellefonte Area School District (two teams), Lock Haven Catholic (one team) and St. John the Evangelist School (one team).
- Second Place: Bald Eagle Area School District (three teams), Moshannon Valley Elementary (one team) and Philipsburg-Osceola Area School District (one team).
- Third Place: Bald Eagle Area School District (one team), Keystone Central School District (one team) and Bellefonte Area School District (two teams).
- Additional teams participating in the event included Sugar Valley Rural Charter School, Glendale School District, Young Scholars of Central PA and Wonderland Charter School.
According to Deb Wakefield, CIU No. 10 reading competition coordinator, 326 students participated from the tri-county region.
The reading list for the competition includes 41 titles and is distributed before the end of each school year. This allows students to begin reading the books over the summer months, which encourages reading 12 months a year.
“The competition would not be possible without the cooperation from the hosting school, teachers, parents and volunteers,” noted Wakefield.
Next year’s event is scheduled for early spring at the Bald Eagle Area School District with a date to be determined.
