CLEARFIELD – Volunteers are still needed to “Sound the Alarm” in Clearfield Borough.
At Thursday’s Clearfield Borough Council meeting, Deputy Fire Chief Justin Worley said the fire department and the American Red Cross are still looking for volunteers to help with the “Sound the Alarm” program.
According to the Red Cross’s Web site, the “Sound The Alarm” campaign will run from April 28-May 13. The program was started in 2014 as part of the “Home Fire” campaign and it is designed to improve the odds of surviving a house fire.
According to the Web site, seven people die in home fires every day. Most of the fatalities occur in homes that lack working smoke alarms. Many of these victims are children and the elderly disproportionately lose their lives.
The American Red Cross wants to improve the odds and save lives- that’s why it launched its Home Fire Campaign in 2014.
During the “Sound The Alarm” campaign, volunteers will canvass at-risk neighborhoods, install free smoke alarms, replace batteries in existing alarms and provide fire prevention and safety information to residents.
According to the Web site, more than 1 million smoke alarms have been installed.
About 125 volunteers are needed for the program. The fire department, along with the Red Cross several local businesses, has offered to help, but more volunteers are needed.

Also at the meeting, the council voted to approve:
- Replacing the locks at the police station at a cost of approximately $2,500
- Denying a request from Patty Baker for a handicap parking space on East Eighth Street.
- Road closures for the Clearfield County Fair Parade on July 30.
- Traffic control for the St. Francis PTO Pony Trot on April 21.
- Signing the fire department’s driver’s list for 2018 to be submitted to the insurance company.
- Spring clean-up for residents on the west side of the river for the week of March 26 and for the east side of the river for the week of April 2.
- Awarding the contract for lawn service to Pine Grove Nursery
- An expenditure of $2,574.76 to repair the camera system on the sewer camera truck.
- Allowing the Salvation Army to use Upper Witmer Park through the summer at lunchtime for a lunch and literacy program.
- A lot subdivision on West Hill Street.
- Advertising for vacancies on all boards and committees.
- Accepting the resignation of Crystal Lanager as part-time dog law enforcement officer and advertising the vacant position.
