MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Freshman center fielder Thayne Morgan (Clearfield) hit .368 and sophomore pitcher Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) notched one of the wins as Penn State DuBois finished 4-3 at the Ripken Experience March 3-6.
Morgan wore the collar in his first appearance before having at least one safety in the next five games.
He singled twice, drove in a run and scored once in the Lions’ season-opening trip finale, a 6-5 victory over Rochester (Minn.) Community and Technical College.
Morgan, who doubled home the Lions’ run in a 5-1 loss to Penn State Schuylkill, wound up 7-for-19 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Orsich started and worked six innings in an 8-5 win over Chesapeake (Md.) College, striking out six while allowing four runs and six hits. He walked two batters and hit two.
The right-hander had gotten one out in a 4-2 loss to Montgomery (Md.) College. He gave up one run and issued one walk.
Penn State DuBois also defeated Garrett (Md.) College 12-7 and Luzerne County Community College 11-1 and lost to Chesapeake 9-8.

HUNTINGDON — Freshman catcher Zane Morgan (Clearfield) singled home the tying run and scored the winning run in the second inning as Juniata came from behind and went on to beat D’Youville 4-2 in non-conference action at Langdon-Goodale Field Saturday.
The Eagles dropped the nightcap 7-3 to fall to 1-6.
In four games, three of them starts, Morgan has two hits for a .286 average with two RBIs and two runs scored.

MEN’S GOLF
SANFORD, N.C. — Senior Jason Thorp (Curwensville) carded a 79, eight over par at the Tobacco Road Golf Club, to top Thiel in its spring-opening 322-343 loss to La Roche last Wednesday.
He led the Tomcats in all seven of their fall outings, the highlights a 69 at the DuBois Country Club that was good for the Penn State DuBois Invitational title and a 73-77-150 at the Avalon Golf and Country Club in Vienna, Ohio, that tied for medalist honors with five others in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Fall Championships.
