WESTOVER – The Curwensville girls basketball squad won for the second time in its last three outings by beating Harmony Monday night on the Lady Owls home court in Moshannon Valley League play by a score of 46-27.
The Lady Tide are now 3-16 on the year, and end MVL action with 3-5 record for the 2017-18 season.
Curwensville defeated the Lady Owls in Curwensville in December 41-35.
And this time the Lady Tide led from start to finish in perhaps its most complete game of the year.
With an 8-0 run in the first quarter Curwensville jumped out to 12-4 edge before the start of the second eight minutes thanks to six points by senior guard Sabrina Spencer who would end the night with nine points.
The 8-0 run was fueled by those six Spencer points and a basket from junior Madison Weber.
Weber had another huge game with 27 tallies, scoring at least 27 points in her third straight contest, something that wasn’t lost on Lady Tide head coach Bob Desmett who said afterwards, “We are all so very proud of Madison (Weber). She is just playing really well for us right now and has been our leader all season.”
Harmony had other ideas in the second quarter as the Owls started on a 7-0 run of their own to cut the Curwensville margin to just one, 12-11, at the 5:40 mark before the intermission.
The answer for the Lady Tide was another 8-0 scurry, with Weber adding four points along with buckets from Spencer and senior Madison Olson as Curwensville would go into the break up by nine at 22-13.
Each squad scored eight third quarter points as the Lady Tide maintained its nine point edge to begin fourth quarter play.
And, in the fourth, it was all Weber for Curwensville, as she dumped in 12 points that enabled the Tide to extend its lead and come out with the victory hardly ever contested by the Lady Owls.
The key to the win according to Desmett was control, as the first year coach commented, “We played under control the entire game and that really helped with the tempo we wanted. We know we are near the end of the year and it’s nice to see us playing well, but we are going to keep moving forward until the end.”
Liz Rorabaugh had eight points for Harmony in the loss.
The Lady Tide took 20 free throws, making 12, while the Lady Owls went to the line just twice, making one.
There was no junior varsity game.
Curwensville is home on Tuesday night against DuBois Central Catholic with the JV game tipping off at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
