Stephen Demchak, a long-time resident of Clearfield, departed from this life after extended poor health, on his 86th birthday, Jan. 20, 2018, at the Mountain Laurel Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Philipsburg to George and Mary Lucak Demchak, he was the seventh of 11 children of which five remain: Joseph, Michael and Carl in Philipsburg, Samuel of Alliance, Ohio and his sister, Suzanne of Camp Hill, Pa.
He was a 1949 graduate of the Philipsburg High School after which he joined the U.S. Army and served in Germany.
Following his honorable discharge, he married Jane Turner of Woodland, who died in 2010.
They had two children, Linda Wills of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Mark Demchak who died in 2014. He also leaves behind his granddaughter, Aimee Wills, in Florida and many nieces and nephews.
He attended Barber School in Harrisburg and became a popular barber and businessman in Clearfield. He cared about his clients and neighbors and would visit shut-ins to give them their haircuts at home.
He had a long-time association with area veterans’ organizations, including the Clearfield Chapter of the American Legion. He was an avid golfer and member of the Clearfield Curwensville Country Club for many years.
Mr. Demchak will be interred at the Indiantown Gap National Military Cemetery, Annville, with a priest of the Greek Orthodox Church officiating a committal service.
Donations in his memory can be given to a veterans’ organization of your choice.
