PENFIELD – Staff members at the Parker Dam State Park have announced programs to be held at the park in February.
Saturday, Feb. 3
Learn to Cross-country Ski:
10 a.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
Program Fee: $3 – all participants
You will learn how to enjoy this winter sport with the whole family. Also, you will learn why the cross-country skis work the way they do, how to get fitted in the proper-sized equipment and then go outside to practice turns, falling down, getting back up and various techniques to get you started. Equipment is available for both adults and kids (limited-number and sizes). You should dress appropriately for being active outdoors.
Pennsylvania Forest History:
1 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
Pennsylvania has seen many changes to its forests, nearly all due to human influence. You will learn more about how Penn’s Woods has changed and why. Also, you will learn about current influences that could drastically change the Commonwealth’s forests yet again.

Thursday, Feb. 8
Heritage Skills Night—Broom Making Demonstration:
6 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
You will learn what goes into making a corn broom. This demonstration will cover all that you need to make your own broom – start to finish. The Primitive Skills Night series is aimed at teaching some skills that are no longer common in modern society.
Saturday, Feb. 10
Ice Fishing Basics:
10 a.m. – Beach House
You will learn the basics of ice fishing safety, equipment and techniques. You should dress to be on the ice; and, if you are 16 years or older and want to fish, bring your 2018 PA license.

Historic Ice Harvesting:
1 p.m. – Lake/Beach House
Prior to electricity and refrigerators, ice kept food from spoiling. You will learn about this lost industry and its methods, then try using some of the authentic equipment on the lake.
Sunday, Feb. 18
Cross-country Ski Trek—CCC Trail:
1 p.m. – near Pavilion 7/Sugar Shack
You will take a guided trek and both improve your skiing and learn more about the park. Previous experience is necessary; call the Park Office (814-765-0630) if you need skis, etc.
Thursday, Feb. 22
Heritage Skills Night—Rope and Yarn Making:
6 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
You will learn how folks used to make rope and yarn. Once you learn how, you will be looking for raw materials everywhere you go. This series is aimed at teaching skills that are no longer common in society.
Saturday, Feb. 24
“Black” Moon:
10 a.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
You will learn why there is no full moon this February, as well as other phenomena that are also called black moons. Attendees will take a look at the moon’s phases and discuss other facts about the moon.
