CURWENSVILLE – With a twisted ankle that happened this past Monday in a game against Elk County Catholic, Josh Terry wasn’t really expected to play Friday night for Curwensville against visiting Kane.
So much for having a seat on the bench.
The Golden Tide senior guard didn’t start the contest, but did come off of the bench midway through the first quarter to score 19 points on the night which paced the Tide to a 58-45 win over the Wolves at Patton Hall in Curwensville.
Tide head coach Matt Wassil said, “We didn’t think Josh (Terry) would be available tonight, but he rehabbed hard this week. We checked with our trainer and Josh’s parents and all said he could play.”
Teammate Avery Francisco, a junior, also hit for double figures for the Tide with 12 and pulled down a load of rebounds in the impressive win.
Curwensville jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead on three straight baskets by senior guard Devon Barrett that helped secure a 13-2 edge after one period over the cold shooting Wolves.
The Tide took its biggest margin of the game,16, with a basket from Terry that made it 21-5 with 5:30 to play before the break.. The 16-point lead by Curwensville was matched several more times throughout the game.
Francisco picked up half of his 12 tallies in the second quarter for Curwensville.
Kane, now 5-5 on the season, did cut the Tide lead to 10 at 29-19 to start the third frame but Curwensville big man, Christian Bakaysa hit for five points in the quarter that helped the Golden Tide to a 42-29 edge after three.
The final eight minute had Kane cutting its deficit to under 10 points just one time at 54-45 on a three pointer by Austin Pierson with just 1:36 to play in the Allegheny Mountain League contest.
Curwensville would finish by scoring their final four points from the free throw line.
On the night the Tide were just 10 of 23 from the charity stripe, but Kane was the wrong kind of perfect, as the Wolves were zero of 12 from the line.
Wassil commented about the early 6-0 lead that his squad took, saying “That early lead gave us confidence that we could get the job done without Terry in there. That really helped us a lot.”
The Tide skipper closed commenting about his offense and ball movement, “The guys have to realize we need to move the ball side to side. That makes life easier for us because you always get better looks with good ball movement.”
Tommy Holt scored 17 points, which included five treys, for Kane, while teammate Chad Greville added 11.
In the junior varsity game Kane defeated the Tide 40-34. High scorer for the Golden Tide was Jeremy Irwin with 10 points.
Curwensville (6-5) is home once again on Monday night, in a Moshannon Valley League game against Moshannon Valley. The Tide beat the Black Knights in mid-December, at Moshannon Valley, 61-49.
The junior varsity game gets the evening’s action started at 6 pm with the varsity to immediately follow.
