HYDE — It took a Zach Hess 22-yard field goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game to secure the win against the Karns City Gremlins on Monday afternoon, but that kick closed out the Bison’s undefeated season at 7-0-2.
Down 15-14 with under two minutes remaining in the game, the Bison defense rose to the occasion and handed the ball back over to their offense at the Gremlin 29 yard line after stopping their visitors on fourth and one when Karns City tried to salt the game away with one final first down.
Bison QB Barrett Kline hit Hunter Stiner to set up first and goal with about a minute to play, but Karns City stiffened, forcing a fourth and goal with 26 seconds left on the clock. That’s when Hess came in and calmly nailed the game winner to set the final at 17-15.
The Bison had a 14-0 lead in the second quarter after a JT Thomas one yard touchdown, which was set up by a Kline blocked punt, and a Kline one yard quarterback sneak.
Karns City fought back with a touchdown pass in the third and fourth quarters, and added a 2-point conversion on the second one to take a slim 15-14 lead.
The Gremlins were driving for another score, but Thomas intercepted a pass in the red zone to thwart the drive.
The Bison had two more fourth quarter possessions to try and lock up their undefeated season, the final one ending in that Hess field goal.
