VIENNA, Ohio — Senior Jason Thorp (Curwensville) capped a very good first half of Thiel’s 2017-18 season by sharing medalist honors for the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Fall Championships at the Avalon Golf & Country Club Oct. 2-3.
He posted the low score, a one-over-par 73, for the first round and followed up with a 77 the following day for a 150 that was matched by Grove City’s Ryan Koenig, Saint Vincent’s Nate Yackovich, Washington & Jefferson’s Daniel Velasco and Thomas More’s Carter Hibbard and Matt Striegel.
Forty players from eight teams competed in the tourney that, coupled with the 18-hole PAC Spring Championships April 28, will determine the overall team title and an automatic qualifying bid to the 2018 NCAA Division III Championships as well as the PAC Player of the Year and the All-PAC teams.
In the team chase, Thiel sits in sixth place with a 673.
Thorp, who earned berths on the All-PAC First Team in 2016 and the All-PAC Second Team earlier this year, has been the Tomcat medalist in all seven events this fall.
He carded a 69 in the Penn State DuBois Invitational at the DuBois Country Club for the second year in a row and was in the 70s in six of his other nine rounds.

HAMBURG, N.Y. — Senior Brett Gardner (Curwensville) turned in an 80 to help Pitt-Bradford win the five-team Hilbert Invitational at the Brierwood Country Club Thursday.
His scored tied for third-best for the Panthers, whose aggregate score of 314 was their second lowest total in eight tournaments this season.
Gardner tied for seventh place in the 37-player field.
He had an 88 Oct. 2 when the Panthers wound up fourth with a 335 total in the Penn State Behrend Invitational at the Lawrence Park Golf Club in Erie.
Gardner wound up tied for 32nd among 58 players from nine teams.

FOOTBALL
BEAVER FALLS — Senior safety Austin Jacobson (Curwensville) returned to action after missing one game and turned in his best performance of the season with seven tackles as Geneva climbed over .500 for the first time by defeating winless Waynesburg 35-14 at Reeves Field Saturday.
Jacobson was tied for second in stops for the Geneva defense with his three solo tackles and four assists.
A crowd of 6,120 saw the Golden Tornadoes improve to 2-1 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference and 3-2 overall.
In four games, Jacobson has accumulated 13 tackles, including seven solo and one a sack for a nine-yard loss.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Junior kicker/punter Spencer Herrington (Clearfield) registered his second consecutive seven-point game as the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Engineers made it a happy return from their longest trip by toppling Catholic 31-14 to disappoint most of the 1,217 fans at Cardinal Stadium Saturday.
Herrington extended his streak of successful extra point conversions to 21 and added a 23-yard field goal that put the Engineers up 17-7 at halftime.
He also punted five times for a 38.4-yard average, with a long of 44 yards.
WPI (4-2) is tied for third place in the New England Men’s and Women’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) at 2-1.
Herrington has made six of his seven field goal tries, with a long of 41, for a total of 39 points.
He’s averaged 33.9 yards for 27 punts, only six of which have been returned.

HUNTINGDON — Senior left guard Jon Janocko (Clearfield) made his 15th consecutive start on the Juniata offensive unit that piled up 472 yards and had the Eagles leading or tied until a touchdown with 19 seconds remaining gave Gettysburg a 42-35 victory at Knox Stadium Saturday.
With 908 fans on hand for the duel of 1-3 Centennial Conference teams, Juniata (2-4) jumped out to a 14-0 lead and was up by two scores again, 35-21, with 11 minutes remaining but moved the sticks only two times on its next three possessions while the defense was unable to hold off the visitors, who scored twice in the final 2:05.

WILLIAMSPORT — Junior center Brad Stubbs (Curwensville) and his offensive line teammates paved the way for a Lycoming ground attack that surpassed 200 yards and accounted for four touchdowns in a 49-21 Middle Atlantic Conference win over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham at David Person Field Saturday.
The Homecoming & Family Weekend crowd of 2,456 saw the Warriors build a 21-0 lead en route to attaining a three-game winning streak for the first time since 2014.
Sophomore defensive lineman Nate Lash (Clearfield) got in his second game for the Warriors, who are 3-3 with a 3-2 MAC record.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Redshirt sophomore fullback Erik Sellers (Clearfield) made his second appearance for Pitt in a 27-24 loss seen by 33,290 fans in the Carrier Dome Saturday.
The Panthers, who had won their first four Atlantic Coast Conference games against the Orange fell to 2-4 and 0-2 in the Coastal Division.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
MIDDLETOWN — Sophomore forward Raquel Grice (Clearfield) made two more starts as Penn State Harrisburg split a pair of Capital Athletic Conference games last week.
She had one of the Lions’ six shots on goal in a 1-0 double overtime win over York last Tuesday.
Penn State Harrisburg (9-4) slipped into fifth place at 2-2 when limited to just four shots at Salisbury, Md., Saturday. The Sea Gulls (6-7, 4-0 CAC) are unscored upon in the conference.

CLARION — Senior forward/defender Carlee Freeberg (Clearfield) played on offense as Clarion picked up a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference point with a 1-1 double overtime deadlock against Edinboro at Memorial Field last Wednesday before being shut out on the road by undefeated Kutztown Sunday.
The Golden Eagles, who entered the week ranked in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Atlantic Region for the first time, are 5-4-3 and tied for eighth place in the PSAC with 18 points. They are 6-5-3 overall.
Clarion managed only one shot against Kutztown, which had risen to the top of the USC national rankings last week and padded its record to 11-0 with its ninth PSAC win.
Freeberg has registered five shots with three on goal. All five of her starts have been on defense.

ALTOONA — Junior midfielder Tessa Munshower (Clearfield) saw action for Penn State Behrend in an 11-1 rout of Penn State Altoona Saturday that gave the first place Lions a 4-0 record in the Allegheny Mountain Athletic Conference.
She has been credited with two shots in eight appearances for the 9-4 Lions.
