KANE – Over the first four weeks of the 2017 high school football season road trips have been very good to the Curwensville Golden Tide football team.
The Tide, who won three of three on the road so far, had a far different outcome on Friday night, losing to unbeaten Kane on the Wolves’ home field in a blowout, 57-0.
It was, as most are, a key game in the Allegheny Mountain League’s (AML) southern division as the Wolves extend its record to 5-0 and the Tide drop to 4-1.
And yes, it was a one sided game, as Kane has now won four straight against the Golden Tide and five of the last six encounters. The win was Kane’s 33rd straight against District 9 opponents.
The Tide didn’t record a first down, with the aid of a penalty against the Wolves, until 9:17 of the second quarter.
It was running back Erik Delong who paced the Wolves to victory with 224 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Delong scored the first three touchdowns for Kane on homecoming night with a pair in the first 12 minutes. The first was a one yard run and the other was a 29 yard run.
After one quarter, it was 15-0 in favor of Kane.
At 9:26 of the second quarter Delong went 43 yards for the score as Aaron Hottel hit the extra point attempt. On the evening Hottel was a perfect seven of seven on PAT’s.
Kane finished out the first half scoring with a 40 yard touchdown pass from Reed Williams to Ray Maze that gave the home team a commanding 29-0 margin at the intermission.
Three TD’s in the third quarter gave the Wolves a 50-0 edge going into the final frame.
The first third quarter score sent the game into the mercy rule at 8:41 as Delong went in from 13 yards out.
Kane scored with 6:30 to play in the third quarter on a 24 yard fumble recovery by Gunnar Fryzlewicz and on a five yard run by Ange Costanzo with 13 seconds to go before the fourth quarter got underway.
The final tally for the Wolves was a one yard run by back-up quarterback Jake Alcorn with 4:26 remaining in the rout.
Curwensville got two interceptions on the night, one each by Devan Barrett and Nick Stewart, who was held to a season low 54 yards on the ground.
Curwensville will now have a whole bunch of home cooking, as it will play four of the remaining five games on the regular season schedule at home starting Friday with the Rovers of Brockway visiting Riverside Stadium for a 7 pm kick-off.
And it will be another big battle in the AML South as Brockway is now 5-0 with a huge 24-21 win over Ridgway Friday night.
Listen to Golden Tide-Brockway football on WOKW-FM, 102.9, starting with the pre-game show at 6:45 pm.
