PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Brookville/Punxsutawney American Legion baseball team wrapped up a sweep of the 2017 Jefferson County League title with an 8-1 victory over DuBois in the championship playoffs finale at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field Sunday evening.
Lance Pennington pitched a six-hitter and belted a three-run double to pace the regular season champs, who will carry a 12-3 record into the Region 7 Tournament that begins Saturday at Clearfield.
After the teams matched runs in the first inning, Chase Smith’s RBI triple in the second proved to be the game-winning hit. He then scored on a wild pitch.
Joey Dipietro made it 4-1 with a solo home run in the third frame, and Brookville/Punxsutawney added four runs off losing hurler Colin Read in the fourth with Pennington delivering the big blow.
Dipietro, who also doubled, and Tyler Park had two hits apiece for the winners.
Ethan Long singled twice and Drew Bankovich and Jackson Frank doubled for DuBois, which finished 9-8.
