PENFIELD – Programs have been announced for July 21-30 at the Parker Dam State Park.
Friday, July 21
iPad Interpretive Apps:
8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
Check out the park’s new iPad and the interpretive apps that staff can use with visitors. Birding and night sky apps and more; all projected onto the big screen to see.
Saturday, July 22
Walk Through the Solar System:
10 a.m. – Beach House steps
Come take a short walk through a vast expanse of space (scaled down of course). Along the way, we’ll discuss the planets of the solar system and their relative distances.
Solar System and Solar Power:
3 p.m. – Beach House steps
Learn a little about our solar system and ways we can use solar power, which is a completely renewable source of energy.
Night Sky:
9 p.m. – Spillway, near CCC Museum
If you are interested in learning more about the night sky and observing through some of the park’s viewing optics, come join us near the breast of the dam. Please be patient as we may have quite a few participants and only two telescopes.
Sunday, July 23
Tea and Talk:
7 p.m. – Beach House steps
Bring your own tea mug to sample some sweet fern/mountain mint tea (hot). Talk will focus on matters of consequence. The Sunday evening tea and talk has been going on for many years – come and be a part of the tradition.
Friday, July 28
Hummingbirds:
8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
People have always enjoyed watching hummingbirds. Come learn more about the fast-paced world of a hummingbird through high-speed camera work and new research. You will get to see, in intimate detail, various hummingbird species as they fight, lay eggs and raise their young.
Saturday, July 29
From Stump to Ship:
3 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
Early wood hicks and river drivers had a tough life, but one that they loved. Learn a little more about the early timber industry while viewing this vintage timbering film.
History Walk:
5 p.m. – Beach House steps
Come learn how the area around Parker Lake has changed, several times, since the 1800’s. Please wear proper footwear for crossing the rocks at the spillway.
Forest History of PA:
8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater
Discover things that you may not know about PA’s forests. Some think that what they see today is what always has been—not true. Our valuable and beautiful forest resources have seen much change.
