SCRANTON — Sophomore third baseman/catcher Josh Sorbera (Clearfield) was hitless in his lone at-bat while freshman pitcher Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) did not make a mound appearance for Penn State DuBois in the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference Championships at Penn State Worthington Scranton’s Matt McGloin Field Monday, May 8.
The tourney was changed from double elimination to single elimination after all Sunday games were rained out, and the PSUAC West Division champion Lions advanced to the title game with a 6-1 win over Penn State Schuylkill behind the six-inning, six-hit pitching of Dom Kriner (DuBois).
Penn State Mont Alto, which ousted Penn State Brandywine 2-0 in the semis, claimed the 2017 championship with a 4-1 victory that was sweet revenge for three regular season losses to the Lions.
The All-PSUAC Team was announced the following day with Kriner named Pitcher of the Year and Penn State DuBois’ Tom Calliari selected Coach of the Year.
Penn State DuBois middle infielders Caleb Bennett (Kersey/St. Marys Area H.S.) and Brandon Getting (Bellefonte/Bald Eagle Area H.S.) received first-team laurels, while outfielder Garrett Brown (DuBois) and pitcher Alex Hart (State College/Kiski Prep) were picked for the second team.
As PSUAC champion, Penn State Mont Alto (14-23-1) automatically qualified for this week’s United State Collegiate Athletic Association Small College World Series at Glens Falls, N.Y., while Penn State DuBois (21-12) also received an invite to return to the 10-team, double-elimination tourney after finishing fifth in the first season of the program a year ago.
