CURWENSVILLE – A cold, wet day and the huge possibility of rain in the afternoon is not ideal for many outdoor sporting events.
Thursday, at Curwensville, well that didn’t matter at all, as the Lady Tide softball team entertained the Kane Lady Wolves.
When it was over, the Lady Tide gained a measure of revenge, besting Kane 15-4, in a contest shortened by the 10-run mercy rule after 4 ½ innings.
In mid-April Curwensville lost at Kane 9-5, committing 10 errors in the process.
This time the Lady Tide had only two errors, which was a big help for winning Curwensville pitcher Clerissia Cole.
Not only did fairly good defense help the Tide, but 11 hits, all singles, nine walks and four hit batsmen enabled Curwensville to hit double digits for the third time this season.
With the victory, Curwensville keeps its hopes alive of reaching the District 9 playoffs.
Two singles, one each by Bailey Bloom and Lauren Tozer, two walks and two hit batsmen enabled Curwensville to open up a 3-0 lead after one inning.
Curwensville tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the second as Bloom picked up another RBI single with Chloe Tubbs picking up an RBI with a single to left field.
The Lady Wolves tried to get back into the game by scoring three tallies in the top half of the third only to see their hosts pick up another three spot in the bottom half of the inning.
Singles by Hannah Dixon, Kayley Harnett and Tubbs, along with a walk and a Kane error, helped give Curwensville a solid 8-3 edge.
Then in the bottom of the fourth, still up by five runs, the Lady Tide offense got serious. Like real serious!
Four more singles, from Keisha Maines, pinch hitter Mikayla Warren, Dixon and Bloom and four more walks and two more hit batsmen, and the next thing you see is a seven-spot going up for the Lady Tide in the bottom of the fourth making it 15-3.
The Lady Tide just needed three outs to pick up the win in the top of the fifth inning.
Kane did scratch out a run in the top of the fifth, but Cole remained steady to secure the early victory.
Bloom led the hit parade for Curwensville with three hits, three runs scored and three RBI’s.
Dixon and Tubbs each had two hits with Dixon scoring four times and stealing three bases.
Then there was senior right fielder Camryn Richards who had the distinction of coming to the plate four times and receiving four base on balls.
Allen Leigey, Curwensville head coach, said afterwards, “It was nice to bounce back after a tough loss against Clearfield yesterday (Wednesday), which I take responsibility for.”
About the Kane battle, Leigey commented, “I told the girls before today’s game that this game was huge for us because if we win it gives us a glimmer of hope to make the playoffs. Plus, the loss at Kane with us making 10 errors, was just a bad loss, and it was good to redeem ourselves this afternoon.”
The Lady Tide (6-10) will be at home on Monday to continue the drive for the District 9 playoffs. The opponent will be the Lady Rams of Johnsonburg, who defeated Curwensville earlier this season (April 5), at Johnsonburg, 4-0.
SCHEDULING NOTE: The Lady Tide will play a doubleheader on Tuesday, at home, thanks to earlier postponements this season due to the weather.
Curwensville will play Brockway first, at 2 pm, then follow up with Elk County Catholic (ECC) shortly after game one.
The Lady Tide lost to both squads in April, Brockway 6-5 and ECC 4-0.
