ST. MARY’S — After having to sit one week due to horrendous weather, and having to reschedule four games to finish out the 2017 season, the Curwensville Golden Tide finally got the opportunity to return to the diamond for the first time since their shutout victory over Harmony back on April 27.
To start the new week, Curwensville made the trek all the way to St. Mary’s to face off with the Elk County Catholic Crusaders. These two faced one another in the second game of the Tide season, with Curwensville falling 6-2 at home.
Early on, Curwensville got things going by taking an early lead.
Sadly, come the middle part of the game, that lead began to get reduced. In the end, late hitting and strong base running allowed the Crusaders to complete a sweep of the Tide, taking this contest in a 6-3 final.
It was some strong hitting by Dan Stauffer that made a big difference. He pulled in an RBI-double in the bottom of the third inning to score the first run for Elk County Catholic. That was after Curwensville already took a 3-0 lead to start the second inning.
In the fourth, the Crusaders plated three runs. An RBI-single by Alec Wehler pulled in the first run, then a two-RBI single from Nate DaCanal put Elk County Catholic up 4-3.
Stauffer added in a pair of insurance runs with an RBI-double in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Crusaders a cushion heading into the final inning.
Wehler pitched a solid outing in the victory, going six innings, giving up three runs on three hits. On the opposite side, Bryce Timko, after being the starter in the previous game, got credited with the loss in his five innings of work, giving up seven hits and four runs, with only one being earned.
Curwensville (4-9) returns to their home field on Tuesday for a 4:15 p.m. start against their rivals from up the road, the Clearfield Bison.
