BELLEFONTE — Adam Armstrong and Ashton Wetzler kept the Clearfield bats quiet while Logan Mathieu drove in three runs to key Bellefonte’s 10-0 Mountain League win in high school baseball action Wednesday afternoon.
The Bison had only two hits, one a double by Zane Morgan, off Armstrong before he was relieved due to his pitch count with two outs in the fourth inning.
Wetzler came on and gave up only two walks in 2-1/3 innings.
The two Red Raiders combined for seven strikeouts, all but one on called third strikes.
Clearfield’s biggest threat occurred in the fourth frame with Bellefonte ahead only 2-0.
Reese Wilson drew a leadoff walk and stopped at third base on Morgan’s two-bagger.
Armstrong got two outs before issuing his second free pass to Seth Bumbarger, loading the bases.
Wetzler bailed him out with a strikeout and went on to complete the six-inning shutout.
Bellefonte (2-1), which boasts several starters from the 2016 team that rolled through the postseason to the District 6 and PIAA Class AAA championships after finishing in a tie with Clearfield for fifth place in the league, put up multiple runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings off starter and loser Jake Sorbera, Eli Glass and Will Myers.
Mathieu made it a Mercy Rule victory with a two-run homer, his third hit, with two outs in the sixth.
Tyler Kreger and Cayden Lucas had two hits apiece.
Clearfield (1-1) will begin its home slate against Punxsutawney in a non-league game Thursday.
