Energy is a direct cost for many “bricks and mortar” businesses – from a manufacturer that burns coal or natural gas in its plant, to a trucking company that fill its fleets daily with diesel fuel, to a Baskin-Robbins franchise that uses freezers to keep ice cream cold. For other businesses, energy is part of their overhead costs.
