TYRONE — Clearfield Area High School sophomore point guard Alayna Ryan was named to the second unit of the 2016-17 Mountain Basketball League All-Star Team announced at the annual winter sports banquet in the Tyrone Area High School.
Ryan scored in double figures 18 times with a high of 26 points against Clarion-Limestone in the 11-12 Lady Bison‘s season opener at the Brookville Tip-Off Tournament.
She led the team in points with 333, a 14.5 average, as well as assists with 121 (5.3 apg) and steals with 104 (4.5 spg).
Ryan also pulled in 92 rebounds (4.0 rpg).
For the third consecutive season, Tyrone senior Kasey Engle was selected Most Valuable Player in voting by the head coaches. She made the first team as a freshman.
First-team honors again went to seniors Hannah Johnston of Central and Maci Ilgen of Penns Valley and sophomore Halle Herrington of Philipsburg-Osceola, senior Alexis Cannistraci of Tyrone and senior Tierney Fernades of Central. Johnston and Ilgen were tabbed for the second team in 2014-15.
Herrington and Cannistraci made the second team last season, and the latter also was honorable mention two years ago.
Joining Ryan on the second team are senior Lauren Young of Bellefonte, juniors Cassie Mock of Central and Maddie Gearhart of Huntingdon and sophomore Sydney Shaw of Tyrone. Mock also was a second teamer last season, while Gearhart moves up from the honorable mention list.
Penns Valley senior Kourtney Beamesderfer and Bald Eagle Area sophomore Morgan Chambers were accorded honorable mention, Beamesderfer for the second time.
