Roy Charles Sunderland, 92, of Curwensville and formerly of Akron, Ohio, died Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at Ridgeview Health Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Curwensville after a lengthy illness.
Born March 25, 1924 in Hepburnia, he was the son of William T. and Margaret (Bell) Sunderland.
Mr. Sunderland was a decorated Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He had served and fought in the Battles of Emirau, New Georgia and Guam.
He was retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio after 41 years of service.
He was a member of the former Curwensville Sportsmen’s Club, the Willowdale Sportsmen’s Club in North Canton, Ohio, the United Rubber Workers Union and the Goodyear Hunting and Fishing Club of Akron, Ohio.
On Aug. 1, 1945 in Paris Island, SC, he wed the former Kathryn Lee Chelgren, and they were the first couple to be wed in the newly-built chapel facility. She survives along with two children, Chick Sunderland and his significant other, Carol Bauman of Curwensville and Kathryn Cain and her husband, Dale of Louisville, Ohio.
Also surviving are four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and two brothers, Clair Sunderland and his wife, Judy of Clearfield and Ted Sunderland and his wife, Donna of Curwensville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a twin daughter and son, Renee Elizabeth and Reynold Boyd Sunderland; a son, Eric Boyd Sunderland; two brothers, Boyd and Bud Sunderland; and five half-siblings, Harry, Alton and James Sunderland, Richard Meckley and Grace Meckley.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc. of Curwensville, with the Rev. Randy Traxler officiating. Burial will be in the Friends Cemetery of Grampian.
Friends will be received from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Friday and from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by members of the Clearfield Honor Guard.
