WILLIAMSPORT — The Clearfield Bison wrestling team had a better second day than they had on opening night of the Tom Best Top Hat Memorial Wrestling Tournament. The Bison moved up three spots in the team standings, placing 14th out of 22 teams, and placed five out of the seven wrestlers that made it to Saturday on to the medal stand.
The Bison were led by 182 pound junior Luke McGonigal, who won his second Top Hat tourney with a 3-2 win over Julian Gorring of Fort LeBoeuf. McGonigal reached the finals with an 11-1 major decision over Central Mountain’s Caleb Turner in the semifinals.
Placing third was senior 220 pounder Hunter Bumbarger. Bumbarger was pinned by Tommy Aumen of South Western in the semis, but then won two consolation bouts to earn the bronze. His third place finish, a third period fall over Cocalico’s Austin Shaver, moved Bumbarger up three spots from his sixth place finish of a year ago.
After losing in Friday night’s quarterfinals 126 pound junior Matt Ryan ran off three consolation round wins to reach the third place match. There he was defeated by South Western’s Chase Mowery 14-6. Ryan matched his fourth place finish of a year ago at 106.
At 152, junior Hunter Wright earned his first Top Hat medal with a sixth place finish. After his quarterfinal match, Wright went 2-1 in the wrestlebacks to reach the fifth place bout. There he was defeated 3-2 by Asher Corl of team champion Central Mountain.
The final medal winner was heavyweight sophomore Avery Gisewhite who placed seventh. Gisewhite lost his varsity debut Fiday night, but won two consy matches before losing in the consolation semifinals to reach the seventh place bout. Gisewhite bounced back from his second loss with a 3-2 win over Titusville’s Kaleb Dunlap.
145 pounder Jacob Carter also wrestled on Saturday, but was eliminated after one consolation round win. Freshman 106 pounder Peyton Smay reaced qualified for Saturday’s wrestling, but didn’t make weight and finished the tourney 1-2.
The Bison will start their dual meet season on Tuesday when they travel to Wingate to face off with Bald Eagle Area, who placed sixth at the Top Hat.
Central Mountain won the team title, while returning state champion Gavin Hoffman of Montoursville won the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler Award.
