DUBOIS – At Monday night’s’ council meeting, Barry Abbott of the Sons of the American Legion (SAL) detailed plans for the second phase of the veterans’ memorial at the DuBois City public park near the legion and howitzer artillery.
The Guardian Circle
Phase 2 would consist of an American shield. Its design was described as being like the back of new pennies within the howitzer’s “wings.” The shield would be created with pavers with dedications on them.
According to Abbott, only veterans will be placed within the shield flag. In addition, each paver will be placed so that it faces the nearby flags.
Any paver that’s not for a veteran will form a three-foot-wide and about 75-foot-long circle around the bench and shield. “Non-veterans become the guardians of veterans,” said Abbott.
Order forms will be available at the American Legion in DuBois. Each paver will cost $100. The goal is to have the project completed by Memorial Day in 2017.
Council approved Phase 2 of the veterans’ memorial project.
Council Bill 1915 – Grease Trap Ordinance
Sam Mollica attended council’s workshop meeting to discuss his concerns about the grease trap ordinance. His first concern was the required monthly cleaning, and he noted he hasn’t had issues cleaning his grease trap every three months.
Solicitor Toni Cherry thanked Mollica for calling council’s attention to this issue, which resulted in an amendment to the ordinance. Council Bill 1915 will now require a monthly inspection and proof of cleaning depending on the trap’s condition during the inspection.
“It’s just a visual inspection to make sure it is functioning properly and not too full,” said City Engineer Chris Nasuti.
Sheetz Store Renovation
The renovation of the North Brady Street Sheetz store was approved contingent upon three conditions being met. The three conditions are that
- Sheetz obtains the appropriate environmental permits;
- Sheetz obtains the highway permits from PennDOT; and
- Sheetz fully closes on the properties needed for the expansion.
