BROCKWAY – The Brockway Rovers dealt the Golden Tide of Curwensville its second straight defeat Friday night in Brockway, 56-20.
The Rovers remain unbeaten at 6-0 and have the lead in the Allegheny Mountain League (AML) South Division. Curwensville is now 4-2 on the year and prospects of being AML champs have now dwindled away. The Tide would need lots of help from other teams to have a shot at the AML title game.
The Golden Tide started fast, real fast, scoring first on a 51 yard run by junior running back Nick Stewart with just 59 seconds gone in the first quarter. Stewart, who broke the 1,000 yard mark on the season last week, rambled for 209 yards on 32 carries for the game.
The touchdown came right after an interception by the Tide’s Noah Von Gunden, his fourth of the year.
Madison Weber added the extra point for Curwensville.
Then the Rovers barked back, a lot.
Brockway would score the next five touchdowns to take a 35-7 lead midway through he second quarter.
Running back Brian Elias had a one yard TD score for the Rovers with Matt Latuska adding a 40 yard run and a 1 yard dive for two scores.
During that stretch Brockway quarterback Hunter Miller threw 22 yards to Noah Vokes for a score and then added a touchdown with a 17 yard run.
Jarrett Esposito added all five extra point attempts.
The Tide broke the Rover scoring streak when Stewart scampered 12 yards for a Curwensville touchdown with 5:01 to go before the break. Weber added another PAT as Curwensville trailed 35-14.
Brockway, however, wasn’t done before taking a halftime rest as it scored twice more before the homecoming activities took place.
Rover Cameron Baka found the end zone from eight yards out and Miller tossed a short three yard strike to Andrew Trunzo for the other. With the two PAT’s by Esposito the Rovers were well in control at the intermission, 49-14.
The second 24 minutes was played with the mercy rule in effect.
Brockway scored the lone TD in the third frame as Miller hit Jake Gorham on a 11 yard toss with 1:25 to play in the third.
For Miller it was his third touchdown pass of the night, giving the senior 11 on the 2016 season. Miller finished the game with 214 yards passing.
Esposito’s PAT was the final point of the game for Brockway.
Eli Jacobs scored for Curwensville in the fourth quarter on a 17 yard run around the right side with 7:41 left in the game. The PAT attempt by Weber was no good.
Curwensville is on the road again next Friday, traveling to Ridgway to play the Elkers. Ridgway defeated Bradford Friday night 13-0 to move to 5-1 on the season.
