UPDATE: 3:44 p.m.
CLEARFIELD – Both suspects who were wanted for allegedly being involved in the Clearfield Borough shooting, which occurred Sept. 5 at the Laundry Station on North Third Street in downtown Clearfield, were taken into custody Thursday without incident.
David J. Clark, 35, of Frenchville has been charged by Clearfield Borough police with criminal attempt/murder; conspiracy/murder; aggravated assault, F2; aggravated assault, F1; two counts each of simple assault and recklessly endangering another person; and possession of a weapon.
Amanda Elizabeth Carfley, 29, of Hyde has been charged by police with conspiracy/murder; two counts each of conspiracy/aggravated assault and conspiracy/simple assault; and conspiracy/recklessly endangering another person.
According to District Attorney William A. Shaw Jr., the search for Clark and Carfley initially focused on several locations in Clearfield Borough. But upon investigation, law enforcement quickly switched their focus to the Frenchville area.
“Early this morning, deputy marshals and state police observed David Clark traveling on a four-wheeler vehicle on River Road,” he said. “Officers gave chase and Clark was eventually taken into custody on Gormont Drive.”
Authorities continued their search for Carfley, he said, and later this morning, a state trooper who was patrolling along Deer Creek Road observed her, and she was taken into custody without incident.
Both are incarcerated in the Clearfield County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail; their preliminary hearings have been scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Sept. 28 at the jail.
According to the affidavits of probable cause in both cases, police were dispatched at around 6:49 a.m. Sept. 5 to the Laundry Station, located at 308 N. Third St., in downtown Clearfield, for a report about a male who had suffered a gunshot wound.
Upon arrival to the scene, police found an 18-year-old African-American male who was lying on the floor inside the laundromat. He had suffered a gunshot wound to his left upper-thigh area, and there was substantial bleeding from the wound.
When asked how he was shot, the victim said he was inside the bathroom with a male witness when another male allegedly opened the door and fired a single gunshot with a handgun, and it struck him.
Emergency personnel were summoned to the scene and started to treat the victim. He was then transported from the scene and later flown by medical helicopter to the Altoona Hospital for treatment.
Police spoke with the male witness at the scene, and he corroborated the victim’s story. He provided a description of the male’s handgun, saying it possibly had black grips and a silver-colored slide/frame.
“The male didn’t say anything and just opened the door and fired the weapon,” the witness told police. Afterward the shooter who was Caucasian and wearing a ball cap fled on foot, at which point the witness stated he called 911.
While processing the scene, an officer observed one spent .45-caliber, semi-automatic handgun casing. It was lying on the floor inside of the laundromat. The officer also located what appeared to be a spent handgun bullet lying on the floor in the bathroom area, where the victim was to have been shot, the affidavit states.
During their investigation, officers were able to view surveillance video from the laundromat. Around 6:44 a.m. Sept. 5, it showed a Caucasian male and female approaching the laundromat and the male was carrying a clothesbasket. He was then shown handing off the clothesbasket to her, as they were walking around the western side of the laundromat.
Once inside the male immediately walked toward the right and to the bathroom door. He was observed reaching for his right coat area while walking and to be raising his left arm into the air. Around 6:45 a.m., the same male was observed running out of the laundromat with what appears to be a handgun in his right hand.
Exterior video footage showed the male and female running north on Third Street. Both continued running until out of view.
Later police viewed surveillance from a nearby business, which showed the male and female parking a Chevrolet pick-up there at 6:42 a.m. They were later shown running up to the same truck three minutes later and fleeing the area.
On Sept. 7 police released surveillance video of the male and female suspects to the local news media. It resulted in various calls from people identifying the suspects as Clark and Carfley.
Police went to Carfley’s residence to speak with her about the incident. She was not there; however, a family member was positive it was her in the video with Clark, who is her boyfriend.
While at her residence, police observed a two-toned Chevrolet pick-up truck. It came back as registered to Clark. Inside of the truck, police observed what appeared to be a partial box of handgun ammunition. As a result, police assisted a towing service with securing the pick-up truck.
Police obtained surveillance from a business located near Carfley’s residence. Around 6:36 a.m. Sept. 5, it showed the pick-up leaving and then returning at around 6:50 a.m. A short time later, two people exited and walked away.
On Sept. 7 police also spoke with Clark’s family members by telephone. Both believed the male in the surveillance videos was their son, Clark. They had been trying to get a hold him throughout the day but were unable to.
Upon further investigation, police found that Clark is a registered owner of a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun.
