CURWENSVILLE – The 2016 high school football season has been both challenging and trying thus far for the Gators of Port Allegany, and Friday night at Curwensville’s Riverside Stadium it was no different.
The Curwensville Golden Tide remained unbeaten at 4-0 and the Gators remained winless at 0-4 as the Tide easily defeated Port Allegany 63-6.
Against a Port Allegany defense that had given up 192 points in its first three games, the Tide took half of the first quarter to put points on the board on a one yard run with 6:23 to go by junior running back Nick Stewart, who also added the two point conversion giving Curwensville an 8-0 lead.
That seemed to break things open for the Golden Tide offense as they would add another 42 points before the intermission.
With 4:49 to go in the first quarter senior Alec Opaliski picked up a Gator fumble and raced 18 yards to pay dirt with Madison Weber adding the extra point to give the Tide a 15-0 edge going into the second frame on Homecoming night for Curwensville.
The Tide then racked up 35 second quarter points with five different players visiting the end zone.
Junior quarterback Bryce Timko threw three touchdown passes in the second set of 12 minutes, a 29 yard toss to Zach Marshall, a 17 yard scoring strike to sophomore tight end Avery Francisco and a 20 yard pitch to senior wide out Eli Jacobs. For the game, Timko was five of six on pass attempts for 91 yards.
Stewart went 46 yards for another touchdown and Kaleb Witherite, a senior, on his only carry of the night, took it in from 19 yards out.
Weber connected on all five extra point attempts in the second stanza that helped Curwensville cruise to a 50-0 halftime lead.
With a super fast mercy rule the second half only took about 35 minutes.
At the 10:55 mark of the third quarter Stewart went 70 yards for his third TD of the evening and 17th overall for the season. Stewart finished the night with 161 yards on only 12 carries.
And for the first time in four games the Gators put points on the board as quarterback Jake Kallenborn scored from 15 yards out against the Tide reserves. The extra point attempt was blocked.
Port Allegany’s touchdown came with 9:58 remaining in the contest.
Tide sophomore running back Blake Passarelli ended the scoring for the night with a 26 yard run to the end zone with just 1:25 to go.
Weber connected on her two PAT attempts in the second half. On the night the sophomore was 7 for 7 and on the year is now 16 for 16 on PAT’s.
A major test for the Golden Tide is Friday when Curwensville hosts the unbeaten Wolves of Kane at Riverside Stadium. Both teams are battling for the top spot in the Allegheny Mountain League Southern Division.
The Wolves shut out Cameron County Friday night 62-0 and are averaging just over 54 points per game on the 2016 season..
Be sure to listen to WOKW-FM, 102.9 this Friday for the Curwensville-Kane game with the pre-game show starting at 6:40 pm. Kick-off is set for 7 pm.
