DUBOIS – The Student Council of DuBois Central Catholic High School is finalizing plans for the school’s annual United Way Day, set for Friday, Sept. 23, which is the concluding event of Spirit Week. All activities will be held on school grounds.
A tradition begun in 1978, DCC’s annual Spirit Week always ends with a United Way Day to raise funds for the local campaign. The school’s normal dress code will be altered during the week to accommodate the wishes of the students.
The special dress days for 2016 will use the ‘versus theme’:   flashback vs. fast-forward, athlete vs. mathlete, business man vs. business woman, and super hero vs. super villain.
Class themes for the yearly skits this year are based on music genres:  sixth grade – classic rock; seventh grade – country; eighth grade- pop; ninth grade – gospel/Christian;  10th grade – punk; 11th grade – reggae; and 12th grade – rap.    Faculty members always manage to surprise the students with a fun performance as well.
A picnic lunch will be part of the celebration, served by DCC parents. Students will be providing the music. Competitions have been organized by Student Council and will be staffed by DCC teachers.
Some of the events taking place include Powder Puff Football, featuring the junior girls versus the senior girls, flag football, softball, kickball, volleyball, Can Jam, soccer, basketball, and a variety of less active events.
Central’s annual lip sync competition will be held in the auditorium Friday morning.  According to tradition, each grade level performs a musical skit drawing from their designated theme. The Senior High Drama Class will provide transition acts between class presentations.
In addition, DuBois Central Catholic Elementary School will be supporting the local United Way Campaign with a jeans day on Friday.
Making students aware of the many needs of the local community and how they can help is an important goal of United Way Day.  Each year, Central students from all grade levels- elementary, middle and high- join together in this fundraising effort, according to school officials.
