BELLEFONTE – U.S. Rep. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (PA-5) has announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded Southern Airways Express LLC (Southern) a contract to provide commercial air service flights from the DuBois Regional Airport (DUJ) to Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) and Baltimore/Washington International-Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI).
The service is offered under the DOT’s Essential Air Service Program.
“DuBois Regional has provided a service in keeping Clearfield, Elk and Jefferson county travelers connected with the national air transportation system,” said Thompson.
“The approach of offering a variety of flights to both Pittsburgh and Baltimore will provide a great opportunity for business and recreational travel to and from the area,” added Thompson.
Southern will provide DUJ with 19 weekly, non-stop round trips to BWI and 19 weekly nonstop round trips to PIT.
According to airport officials, specific details about further business ties to the airline will be released in the coming weeks. It is anticipated that Southern will keep the maintenance operations that service the current commercial carrier on site. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s contract with Southern will run for a two-year period, from Oct. 1, 2016 through Oct. 31, 2018.
“We are very excited about the future of commuter flights at the DuBois Regional Airport with Southern Airways,” said Clearfield-Jefferson Counties Airport Authority Board Member Dave Stern. “The airline plans to offer great prices on flights and has a strong reputation for reliability, which is vital for people in our area traveling for business.”
