Several Australian athletes were fined after using the wrong accreditation to enter a basketball arena where the nation’s team played Serbia in the Olympics semifinal.
Brazilian police detained the athletes then released them with a fine and good-behavior bond.
“A mistake was made this evening and athletes accessed the Olympic venue without the correct accreditation,” Australian Olympic Committee chief executive Fiona de Jong told reporters Saturday outside a police station in Rio de Janeiro.
“We have apologized for that mistake before the magistrate and the prosecutor.”
The Australian athletes’ fellow basketball players also suffered a disappointing night — losing to Serbia 61-87.
The Serbian team will face Team USA.
